Kenneth: I don't really know what to put in a Guestbook so if I sound weird just tell me lol... ... ...I suppose I will start by saying The Beckwith is a wonderful place, you find such Love and Drive from the Cast and Crew, the sets are phenomenal, you get great Windmill shaped cookies and coffee in intermission too lolz. I guess what im trying to say is you really feel warm and welcomed at the Theatre and that truly is whats so great about the beckwith =)

Aislinn Frantz: I could be incorrect, but I'm almost certain that the theatre Ms.Jacoby is describing is the former Beckwith Theatre which, sadly, was torn down in the 60's. The current Beckwith was a former United Methodist Church and Knights of Columbus building. Hope this helped.

Bob Singleton: I googled "Beckwith Theatre in Dowagiac" searching for the theatre's famed facade. I had just read in Susan Jacoby's Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism (pp 149-151) Beckwith's desire "to make the [Dowagiac] townsfolk aware and appreciative of his personal pantheon of heroes and heroines whom he considered to be the true benefactors of the human race." Jacoby says that "the facade of the theatre....featured men and, even more extraordinarily, women who, as far as political and religious conservatives of the day [1893] were concerned, constituted a rogues' gallery: Ingersoll, Paine, Voltaire, Susan B. Anthony, George Eliot, Victor Hugo, George Sand, and Walt Whitman. Busts of Goethe, Shakespear, Beethoven, and Chopin also gazed down upon Dowagiac's main shopping street." Although I found on your website great photos of the exterior of the theatre, I did not see any of the carvings that Jacoby describes. What happened to them? Did they not exist? Were they removed? As a theatre person myself, I am glad to read that the theatre is still functioning. Keep up the tradition.

By the way everyone thanked me for such a creative idea for a clean but fun night out! So now I'm thanking you for doing such a great job!
