Lester Frothinger Jr: I live in Ohio currently but lived in Pomona California when the disaster struck. My sister ran into my room and woke me up saying "The Columbia blew up"! I jumped out of bed and switched on the TV and stared in horror as they replayed it over and over. I'm not afraid to admit I cried for the men and women who died that day. Thanks for sharing these pictures with the world.

cathy: Ennis TX. What can I say? So sad.
I was outside that morning with a vidio recorder and a digital camera,
they decided not to work for me that day...
I watched the shuttle go over my house as it was falling apart,at the time I thaught it was smaller planes flying beside it.So I started to go inside the house,
Then my house shook, i thaught the kids and dogs were running around ,but when I went inside every one was a sleep.
Then I heard the T.V.
There were peaces around here also.
Thanks for letting us look at your pictures.

Ron and Karen Shawl: The tragedy was overwhelming...as was this
beautiful tribute. It's hard to fathom that
all of these pieces went together to form
a beautiful shuttle that carried these heroes
to a place so far away. They went with pride
on a mission that was the climax of their
education and training. We will learn from
this tragedy...and will put the pieces together
again. They have a special place in history and
in our hearts. God Bless them as they look down
upon this earth that they commanded so well.
Thank you for this wonderful tribute..they are
indeed the 'Wind Beneath Our Wings'.

Melissa Phillips, Jacksonville, FL: Just as with Challenger, I will never forget where I was and how I heard about Columbia. When I first moved to FL, I lived in Titusville, directly across from the Space Center launch pads. I watched every launch and knew when the shuttle was coming home by the triple sonic boom that shook my house and made me jump. I have friends who work for NASA; one works with the landing crew. I thought of him as he and the others waited for that sonic boom that meant Columbia would soon be safely home. But it didn't happen. Columbia was the first shuttle I watched launch from my front row seat on the bank of the Indian River estuary and always held a very special place in my heart. Seeing these photos brings tears to my eyes at the loss of this magnificant "bird" as people at the Center lovingly call the shuttle, and for the crew members and their family and friends. While it's certainly a tragedy, I take comfort in the fact that these space travellers died doing something they believed in and loved. Onwards and upwards.
Deep Peace,
Missy

Dave Whitfield: A final streak across the sky,
A trail of devastation,
A sudden ending, a tragedy,
Felt throughout our nation.
A fleeting dream so many share,
As seen through childlike eyes,
A dream to soar beyond the clouds,
Up with the stars in nighttime skies.
They lived their dream, our seven heroes,
To this dream they gave their lives,
Behind they left us in our grief,
As with their children, husbands, wives.
We are grateful for our heroes,
For their courage, strength and will,
They dared to lead, to live their dream,
And with the Angels they're soaring, still.

Tom Tyler: I have for over thirty years lived within a 10 minute drive of the Manned Spacecraft Center and Mission Control in Clear Lake City, and I have been thru every NASA disaster from Apollo 1 on with friends and aquaintances in the space program.
I have been aboard the Columbia, and anyone who has been anywhere within a mile of these vehicles knows they are guargantuan, in monumental ways for that word is thoroughly inadequate.
The pictures here have brought home the devastation.
I have not seen a single piece of that incredibly huge spaceship any larger than a car door.

Roland W. Williamson: Observing from Cheyenne, Wyoming...
Thank God we still have such pioneer visionaries that can selflessly put their noses into the wind and their gaze to the horizon and beyond. They'd not want to be known as "heros" - just those that are fortunate enough to lead.

Donald Nguyen: I'm sad to say that the news about this shuttle didn't make the 'big' news in Holland, so I didn't know very much about this. But thanks to your picturetrail I've learned a lot more about the shuttle and it's passengers. It's sad, too sad, but God bless their honoured souls, may they rest in peace. If they can't explore this world, may they use their knowledge to explore the next... Much love and respect, Donald, [Rotterdam, Holland]

Tom Nordblom: Here in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia, we were aware of the loss of the shuttle Columbia about 10 hours after it happened. A 90 year old friend, Thursa, told us about it in Church on Sunday morning, February 2nd. "The shuttle crashed in Texas."
Saturday night, our time (which is about 17 hours ahead of Texas time), I planned to take my family for the first time to what is called a 'bush dance' at a place in the countryside near Wagga Wagga called 'Downside'. This I knew would be away from the city lights and afford a good view of the stars and satellites. So I looked up Wagga Wagga at www.heavens-above.com and checked whether the International Space Station (ISS, always big and bright) would be visible. I learned it would not be visible from here that night. Then I checked whether any 'Iridium flares' would be visible and got the same results. When I checked on the Space Shuttle, I found it (STS-107) was expected to be visible in a pass across our sky from 9:14:12 pm to 9:17:48 pm, for three and a half minutes, crossing over from our West to our North East. I printed out this info and also the charts that showed the predicted path of Columbia across the background of our stars. It would pass between Orion and Saturn before disappearing (for us) in the Earth's shadow. This evening, with a clear sky, would almost certainly offer nearly perfect conditions for viewing this man-made wonder gliding through our diamond-studded black velvet heavens.
As it happened, the live Irish folk music, with violin, flute, mandolin, guitar and drum (akin to American bluegrass music), was outstanding. And the comedy and sheer fun of watching the clumsy barn dancing of farm and city people of all ages, from about five years on up, provided a distraction so great that I forgot about the Space Shuttle for that moment. Later, I thought "Oh well, you can always see a space shuttle go by when conditions are right".
The next morning, of course, we heard the terrible news. Now, I really regretted forgetting to step outside that old corrugated tin community hall at Downside at 9:14 pm. I might well have caught sight of Columbia's purposeful, graceful orbital glide, passing 'routinely' just 405 kilometers above us here in Australia... perhaps only 45 minutes before she disintegrated over Texas. That's how I felt the loss personally...
What appear as routine, predictable-as-clockwork tasks can come quickly undone in the dangerous business of speed and power involved with space flight. Of course, space flight always has been and will remain dangerous, despite rigorous attention to safety. But this should not stop the programs of discovery that are possible from Earth orbit. It is no small credit to those who achieve it that anybody anywhere on earth can look up at night, when the time is right (and the weather cooperates and when city lights don't blind us), to see with our own eyes an orbital laboratory (ISS) or observatory (Hubble) gliding by. To know these will glide right around the earth each 90 minutes or so gives us a feel for how small our planet really is. And the very smallness of our Earth seems reason enough for us to be the best stewards we can of its limited resources. Brave women and men, who are also the best trained and capable engineers, biologists and other specialists, will continue to be needed for the stewardship roles of keeping an eye on Earth from above and understanding 'what makes her tick'. I think there will be no end of volunteers for duty on Space Shuttles, ISS and/or subsequent systems for space flight.

I find it odd that Columbia's final resting place is in an area I lived and worked in for over 18 years. I know the Nacogdoches/Lufkin area very well after working in the forest industry for several years. I will always wonder if some debris was found on the 5 acres we owned off FM 225 west of Lake Nacogdoches. These pictures have helped me tremendously.
