S Sadeika: Please have someone check your web-site. Many links point to files - as referenced on the hard drive - rather than to files - as referenced from the web browser. This has the unfortunate effect that, while the web-site seems perfect locally many links cannot be found when running from a non-local browser. Regards, S Sadeika

Robert Reid: I enjoyed reading through your blog. I consider myself as a casual carver. I belong to a carving group which meets 3 hours each week at a local senior center. Our group has grown from three carvers to over twenty. Also, about half of our carvers are women. I do regret that more young people are not involved in woodcarving. I guess that the complications of life get in the way of the effort it takes to acquire the skills involved in learning woodcarving. Anyway, I find it a relaxing and enjoyable pasttime.

Arlene Maben: I just read most of the article on your site about women woodcarvers and I am very impressed. I reside just south of Albany, New York. My husband and I recently began woodcarving as a hobby we could do together and I'm finding it very enjoyable. We joined a club in Kingston, New York and have been to one meeting (I was the only female there, although they said they have other female members). I have almost completed my first project in basswood, a simple relief pattern. I want to carve "in the round" and I am excited about getting started, although apprehensive as well, having no experience. Thank you for a wonderful article!

Bill Hastings: Hi, Happened on to your web site through the Indiana carving site. Your comments are interesting, and sage, but when I reached the bottom of the site I found "What is the difference between art & Craft." Both my Wife and I are either cursed or blessed with the artistic skills and desires. I fear that our work is not as good as yours but we keep trying, and as you suggest, teaching. It is work but with a lot of pleasure mixed in. I appreciated your art, and skill. Thanks for sharing it. Bill Hastings, 989-724-7222, Email above.\

Jen Nailor: Hi Maura, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your class on Tuesday at NEWR. Boy, I sure do enjoy that retreat. I have made so many wonderful friends in the last 6 years. I have learned a ton and enjoy every minute. It goes so fast, and I wish the time would go in slow motion. But it doesn't, it races on. Your work is fantastic! You can really be proud of the craft you have developed. Take care and keep carving.

April 19, 2009 6:39PM

TK: Maura, Thank you for the Ebook. It was one of the best reads I have seen yet for woodcarving. Im one of the boomers and I have to say you nailed it. I would at some time like to learn how to do carvings by hand and will probably take a couple classes at it. I also use one of the machines to help me with my carvings and like the way they come out but there was always something missing I thought and now I know what it is. No blood in my work. Again thanks for the ebook.
April 19, 2009 1:03PM

Georgiann Burdette: I too wish I had known I should have been a woodworker at an early age. But, like you, women were not considered for non traditional careers at that time. I have spent my life in woodworking classes and have traveled with the woodworking show venue selling tools and have even been a manufactor's rep for major tool lines. I love wood, it's smell, it's feel and it's spirit. Now I am taking classes in wood carving and I love it. I am frustrated that my skill in furniture making doesn't easily transfer to carving technique. I am having fun and again feeling so greatful for that "comfortable" feeling of being where I should be! Thank you so much for telling your story. Sincerely, Georgiann Burdette, Mystic, CT.

October 9, 2008 10:13PM

Laurel: I have an original wood carving crafted by Alois Lang. It was presented as a gift to my grandfather, who was a Methodist minister, in Michigan. This wood carving depicts the second-coming of Christ. There is a lamb atop a Bible, which has seven "tabs"...depicting the seven seals...or the number of perfection. The lamb is holding a banner streaming from a pole, that is shaped like a cross, at the top. This is set in the midst of a hollowed .circle. There are also four flowers; one in each corner. Each of the flowers has three petals. The message is priceless. Still, I wonder, because it was carved by Alois Lang, what it's value is as a work of art, and if I should have it insured. Also, it is made of walnut, or mahogany. Are there any special measures I need to take to preserve the wood?
August 28, 2008 3:44PM

Marilyn: Thank you for your quick response, welcome, and assistance. I love your doors.... I have completed stain glass windows... largest is 72"x24"... 19 inch circle holding grape leaves and clusters of grapes with background of opalescent diamonds. Now I want to do something within a carved frame or door. I had never thought of doing that before. Marilyn PS... I found a small, retail mill in a neighboring town, 9 miles from my home... will visit there tomorrow to get wood.

cyril lichtensteiger: Hi Maura: w hat a nice piece of work you have posted and made of your career in woodcarving. You are indeed modest, not having shown us all the artocles that appear in the website. Ihave not done anything of consequence while suffering around with this 100 pound weight on my left leg. Just three weeks moe and then I'll be free-free-free. Meanwhile I have done minimal on a couple of incidental spoons, not wanting to be in the basement darkness or get Dolores upset with wood chips all over me or the upstairs. I look forward to the Philly wood show, unencumerd by cast, free as a bird (fingers crossed). Stay well. Cyril.

Tony Nesbitt: I am in Sydney, Australia and read your work via Chris Pye's newsletter. It is very informative and goes much deeper than the limited articles in magazines. I am a founding member of the Sydney Woodcarving Group which was formed around 12 years ago and has 70 members. We are mostly hobbyists with a handful of very serious carvers trying to break out of that mould and be accepted as sculptors/artists. Galleries here will not accept works in wood because their customers just don't assign any value to it. Wood is what is lying around on the ground and they think that anyone could carve it if they were interested enough to have a go at it. The sculture that sells is anything in bronze. Corporate or achitectural buyers believe they are short changing their clients if they don't buy sculptural art made of metal. The irony is that most of these works probably started out as wood. Although most carvers support our government's ban on the import of rainforest timbers, we do grieve the loss of mahogany and other beautifully figured stock. Of course our co-operation has really done nothing much to stem the rape of these forests and I am not sure if it is worse to see these logs burnt and chipped for newspaper rather than having just a miniscule proprotion of them turned into something of beauty that would have lasted for at least another hundred years. In countries like Japan where wood is a very scarce resource woodcarving is valued. Most of Australia's commercially successful woordcarvers ship their finished work straight off to this market. Both their talent and their medium (often Australian native timbers) are appreciated there. We are very short of teachers in this part of the world. I think our Aussie nature dictates that you only reluctantly hold yourself out as an expert at anything and it would be very presumptuous to expect to be paid for just showing someone what to do. Those that do teach are mostly from a European cultural background which is a good thing for us because they tend to be traditional in their approach to it. It will be interesting to see the effects of our multi-cultural society on the future of woodcarving in Australia. Perhaps that is the sleeping giant that will one day awake and give it the boost to prominance it deserves. Good luck with your future endeavours and thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

Kathryn: Hey Maura, it's your cousin. I can't believe how great you are at this! Also, the wood burning was really really good. I also am an aspiring artist(ok, fashion designer) and therefore I have seen really great work and I think yours is definitely up there. I'd love for you to make me something but I'll wait until I get something going(i.e. a job) and then I'll commission you for a huge sign. love your work!!

I live in Brooklyn, and seem to have the same intrestes as you. I carve. I scroll, etc. Your scrollwork around the cabints is awsome. Great work. Would you like to share some ideas? The coffee is always hot and my wife cooks real good Italain food. Maybe you would like to come down and see the shop. I love to show it off. I just re-built it from the ground up. But thats a story for another time. you can email me at lennycen@yahoo.com or call 718-344-1981 Warm Regards, Lenny
