Ron Thoreson: Janie,
I stumbled across your site looking for pictures from around Superior. Your site is wonderful, and brings back many memories. After leaving in 1995, it is always nice to get back to Superior and see where we grew up. Best wishes and keep up to great web work! Ron

I live in California and am from California but my father and his siblings (OLSON then changed to BITNEY) are from Superior, and i plan to travel there some day. One of my aunts has been back and the house they grew up in (5431 ALBANY AVE) is still there. Are you close to this address? Is Superior HUGE! Wonderful website, and it looks like a fun place.

Ron Nickolett: GREAT web site. My brother Bruc, in another state, just told me about it so I haven't explored all of it yet.
I grew up in Billings Park on 1917 Lackawanna from 1939 to at52 when we moved near Central High on
Weeks Ave.
I should have graduated in 1953 but took an extended trip in 1952 and missed a year and graduated in '54.
I was in a family band, playing night clubs around Superior.
After H.S I entered the Air force and remained there for twenty and a half years, spending time in Texas, Georgia, Okinawa, Kansas and finishing my career as a recruiting supervisor for the Air Force in South East Wisconsin. I worked in a hospital in Milwaukee for 17 years and retired to Arkansas in 1991.It's been many years since being in Superior and I always miss that part of the country, but not the weather.
I've missed most of the reunions
because I only knew my class members or two years. I went through the school years with the kids who graduated in '53
Keep up the reat work!
Ron

James D. Prior: I was born the first baby delivered in Saint Mary's hospital and my oldest daughter I have been told was the last baby born there before it was changed into a retirement hospice for the aged. My daughter was born March 23, 1968. I was born October 22, 1944 so if what I just said is incorrect, it is what the head nurse told me and my wife when we lived there. My father was born in the house in the middle of billings park, he was the 6th or 7th son of Frank Prior of central park. We lived on Stetson Avenue in south superior during and after WW2, My grandfather was a county supervisor before WW2, but because he had been born in Germany they made him resign during the war. His name was George M. Paulus and lived at 1930 E. 6th street where my grandmother lived until the late 1970's. She passed away in 1981 just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday. An uncle married to one of my mother's sisters was the director of the ore docks, his name was Elmgreen. My mother's brother James E. Paulus was wounded in a tank fire during the battle of the bulge.
Kieth Prior worked in the ship yards for many years, he was one of my father's brothers, another of his brothers was a fireman on the lakers working for the Wilson line until he retired. I do not believe there are any more Prior's living in Superior. We moved to California in 1950 where my father taught school until he retired in 1974. His name, Donald H. Prior, was the chief engineer building the "Musical bridge" on E. 2nd street one summer when we were visiting relatives in the 1950's. I attended Wisconsin State for 2 years before serving in the U. S. Army from which I am retired. Now live in Kingman, Arizona with my vietnamese wife of 30 years. OK, so I fell in love with the war and was married to it, brought it home with me and now I get to fight a battle everyday. And if you tell her I said that I will swear you are just trying to make trouble.

Ken Grymala: Janie,
One of my cousins sent me a link to this site, which I've certainly enjoyed.
Uncle Sam took me away from Superior in 1969, but I still call it home. The pictures sure bring back some memories. But, when I visit, so much of it is gone. I'm glad someone preserved a few memories.
A while back, I realized there were a lot of photos I don't have. I wonder if others might have old photos of old Superior that they could share on this site, or a similar site.
A liquor store and gas station sit on the site of the house in Allouze where my parents lived when I was born.
The old public sauna was just behind our house. When I grew up there were two public saunas in Superior, the one in Allouze where I went now and then, and the one on the North End where my cousins went. The old saunas sure were ugly, but they sure were nice on cold January nights. It would be neat to see a picture, although I doubt anyone ever thought to take a picture of such a place, inside or out.
Many, many years ago, they tore down the hospital where I was born -- St. Francis, at about 24th Ave. E, and E. 3rd St. -- I think (same avenue as St. Francis school and church) . Somewhere I have an old invoice that shows that my parents paid Dr. McGill about $8 to deliver me in 1947.
The grade school and church I attended are long gone -- St. Adelbert's, at 22nd Ave. E. and E. 3rd St. I'm sure some would love to have a picture of the old school just so they could burn it. But, it was part of our history, good or bad.
As of about 1958, St. Adelbert's was also the school of St. Joseph's "children's home" when the diocese closed the home's school. (Even in those days, we were politically corrected by the nuns. We were cautioned never to ever call it an orphanage, nor to call our friends "orphans.") Again, thanks for the photos of St. Josephs, where so many of us spent a lot of time with our school mates.
During much of my growing up time, my parents owned the store across from what was then East High at 18th Ave. East and 5th St. We lived in the back of the store. A look out our kitchen window down 18th Ave. East, and we saw the old Cargill Elevators (thanks for the picture). The elevators blew up one day with a mighty boom when the grain dust ignited.
In the winter, when the snow came, we'd drag our sleds and toboggans down to the Stockade (again, thanks for the picture). We'd sled from behind the stockade down to the railroad tracks that served as a rail yard for all of the East End elevators, including the old Cargill Elevators.
In those days, the city flooded numerous vacant lots in the city for skating rinks. It meant that we wouldn't have to walk all the way to the Red Barn (next to the Onaway -- again thanks for the picture) or to Blackstead's, at about 26th Ave. E. and 5th St. Does anybody have a photo of Oscar spinning 45s in the warming house at the Red Barn, while our mittens sizzled on the barrel stove? And, where did the city get all that cut and split firewood that we burned in the warming houses?
When I was in high school, I worked in the old East End Radio Shop for a wonderful mentor, Ed Myers. I was recently in Superior, and I noticed the original sign was still hanging out front of the shop which has been closed since Ed died back in the 70s.
Our part of the building was split. The radio shop was in one half, and Charlie Lampi, a friendly old Finnlander who spoke almost no English, had a shoe shop on the other side of the wall. A tavern divided us from the East End Drug Store. The East End Police Station was in a tiny little lean-to at the back of the drug store.
I'm the one who played the Christmas records in the 60s that blasted out from the speakers on top of the East End Radio and the East End Drug Store during the Christmas season.
East End had a movie theater, but it closed in the late 50s. When I was in high school, the East End Hardware was next to it. The owner, Dick East, decided he needed to expand. He bought the old theater. I owned a pickup truck in those days, and he paid me to clean out the old theater. I took dozens of trips to the dump on Wisconsin Point with things like the seats, the lights, the candy counters, the screen and curtain, and on and on. Oh, if we only had these items today to sell on ebay.
I believe that since I last visited, they blasted down my high school -- East High. Thankfully, you posted a few pictures.
I will dig through my archives, and see if I can add a few interesting photos.
Thanks for the memories,
Ken Grymala

Well thank you for letting me take a step back in time if not only for a brief moment. Hope to meet you some day at Jimmies. I know my parents love it their.

In looking up information about Central High School, I was led to your sight and have been so thrilled to see all the old familiar sights in Superior! And Again please forgive me for using your Guest Book for a question, but I also adore your paintings so I guess THAT belongs in here. :-)

Mr Bill: Hi Kyle,
I have wondered about the Iron structure too. I summize by photo's it was an anchor point for the electric trolley car cables (High Voltage) AND most importanly it had a very high point that was lightning protection in case of a hit by
lightning........if it didn't have a ground point the lightning could kill passenger riding at the time in the metal cars during a hit.
Best,
Mr Bill

Kyle Talaska: Excellent site...
I grew up in Foxboro, and have been interested in this area's development for a long time. I enjoy seeing history through others' eyes, and hence, I love the Superior photos.
Could someone please explain to me, though, the background and purpose of whatever the heck that quad-legged arch is in uptown Superior (north of Broadway (the current Amsoil Bldg is in the foreground) is?)
I am truly interested...

Janie: Casey...I am just giggling about,,," a mans took it! I forgot till now...We had so much fun with that! Wasnt it one of your sisters that said it? You and I and Desiree were so silly and had so much fun. When I think about school days...I always think first of going to Central with you two. And...of going to school early and hiding all over. Wow...how did we get to be this age already. Well...not that we're old yet! So your Girl is getting married. Oh how nice. Congratulations Momma. Hugs...Jane.

Casey: Thanks, Jane, for taking the wonderful pictures. I went home before you got there, so didn't get to see you. We had a big day the next day (our daughter Ann's wedding reception), so I made it an early night. And I'm glad I did by the looks of it! Fun was had by all. But they were suffering the next day, I'm sure! Yes, I remember the early bus. Why were we so anxious to get to school???? Remember "a mans took it!"? Lots of memories. Keep up the excellent work on the pictures. I love them! Casey

Janie: Dear Casey. The Culhane Birthday Party was created with you in mind. This is your family and friends. I am sorry I didnt get to put you in it too. Thanks for all the fun years we had while going to school together. I tried getting in a locker one day at Central but cant fit anymore. Rememeber the early bus? Friends always, Janie.
September 23, 2003 9:45AM
Casey Culhane Peterson: Hi Jane. I really like what you have done by creating this web page so all of us Billings Parkers can remember the good old days. It has sparked quite a few of my memories. My first home was a house at 1807 Iowa, right across the street from Jimmy's. It is no longer there - the Lehto's built a garage there once the house was gone. I remember my parents, the Lehto's and the Tomzak's (Pat & Herman - my aunt and uncle) selling Christmas trees in the front yard. I really loved the smell of that. Downtown Billings Park was very lively when I was a kid and we didn't miss much living right in the middle of it! Keep up the great work, Jane. I will visit it often. Love all your art! Casey
