Jen: As I do more of my own design work, I am beginning to appreciate your work even more. Your work is fantastic Grandma! We should definitely have another show sometime...maybe with my design work and your photography, etc.?

Robert A. Baron: Here it is 2009, already, and I can’t believe as yet I haven't looked at this wonderful treasure of images you have created for everyone to enjoy.
They are lush and fulsome, exotic and exciting, subtle and erotic (or nearly so), bountiful and gorgeous, raw, yet sophisticated, and strikingly attractive.
Overwhelmed, I must pause and return refreshed, just to finish this wonderful tour.

Ann Harper: Wow! The cameras are clever and delightful. I really enjoyed them and they way in which you presented them.
April 11, 2006 4:17PM
Robert A. Baron: Elinor,
I am thoroughly fascinated with these photo objects. Naturally, I view them in the context of the history of art. What comes to mind first is that they stem directly from the Dada tradition of Marcel Duchamp, in particular his so-called "ready-mades" -- works that are found and presented as art as is. But they also seem to refer to his notion that to make a work of art out of a functional object you must destroy its function so that the only viable response to it is aesthetic. Duchamp's famous "fountain" (the up-turned urinal) or his "gift" -- an iron with a row of tacks fused to the flat side are examples.
The altered cameras take this one step further -- not only do you destroy their intended purpose but you recreate that purpose in the form of pictorial allegory. The conceit is as brilliant as is the joke. And as social commentary, they are unsurpassable.
What's more, Duchamp's were mostly unapproachable and were intended to shock. How fully the wheel turns, your cameras are part of a trend to make such works attractive, humorous -- even glamerous -- and universal in their appeal.
Good job & good luck.
