George Dively: Hi, glad to see your site. I'm the Historian/Researcher for the 33rdFG (WW2) and put out a newsletter twice a year to the 350 or so vets on our roster. My father was in the 58thFS in the CBI theater, WW2. I think he was also stationed at Labrador, late 40s-early 50s period. My goal is to preserve the legacy of the men of the 58/59/60th Squadrons from 1941 through the Cold War era (a big task!), from P-40s, P-47s and P-38s to F-84s, F-86s, F-94s, F-89s, F-101s and F-102s. I'm also friends with Dick Doritty who is the organizer for the "Cold War" 58th-60thFIS Reunion Group. My interest in the 59th in your particular time period and location due to a friendship I had with Chuck Dibble, who gave me his "black watch" patch many years ago. Wish I had an old L-2 blue jacket for it too... ha-ha! Thanks again, George

Sam Gallinger: I was an RO at Goose in the 59th from Sept 1953 to Sept 1954. I had two pilots during that time. Bob Barton from VA was my first pilot and Frank Carpine of WA was my second. Al Fickensher: This is a repeat of my guestbook entry of a year ago so I can include my e-mail address this time. My fifteen months were March '63 into June '64 and I was an A2c 32251F "radar troop". Have nice memories now, but couldn't wait to get out while I was there. My gosh!, how young we were. A couple of my 102 photos are in the gallery.
June 17, 2001 12:34PM

Charles H. Farrar: Great pictures! Brings back memories of my tour at Pepperell 1953-1954, Goose Bay 1954 and Resolution Island NWT 1954-1955. One small technical correction. The photo labeled Harbour adjacent to Pepperell AFB. There was no harbor. It is a lake called, of all things, "Qidi Vidi" it was the place they held the regattas in the spring and occasionally landed a pontoon equipped plane. On the West side of the lake was a park-like expanse where you could sit in the grass and watch the world go by. Or if you wanted to you could climb the hill behind you and go up to Cabot's Tower and the Queen's Own Fort. Cheers!
June 4, 2001 6:47PM

Glen E. (Ed \"Smitty\") Smith: Would still like to hear from Elfred (Al/Feets) Kramer and Nick (The Greek) Vafiadis, 59th FISers in '54'-'55, who have made contributions to this page in the past. Anybody know how to reach them? Looking at the pictures of Pepperell reminded me of the time that our softball or basketball team won the NEAC tournament (both teams won tournaments) there in 1954 and the cheapskates didn't give out trophies. We stole an aluminum butt can from the Officer's Club and painted it up with the 59th insignia and our names. I wonder if it's still up there somewhere? (tworet@home.com)

Dawn Morgan Niederwerfer: Hi! Great to find your site! Been looking for info on 59th FIS. Anyone know/remember Richard (Ric) Morgan? He was my Dad, and flew with 59th. We lived in upstate NY '63ish to '66ish, then he was transferred in 59th FIS to Edwards AFB California(?). I was kindergarten/1st grade then. We lived in Klamath Falls Oregon then. He was test pilot and flew interceptor missions there. He was killed in an accident there in '68. If anyone knew him, I'd like to hear from them. Any info on the 59th at Edwards AFB, anywhere? Great to see that "The Bat" isn't forgotten! I've still got Dad's 59th "Bat" coffee mug! Treasure it like Tut's Gold!!! I've very proud of all of you that served!!!! Thanks! Dawn

Jim Henthorn: I was assigned to the 59th right out of Tech School (46230) and arrived in Goose Bay just in time to help close the squadron (october 1966). I still have my black hat with the 59 on it and memories of the tunnels between the barrracks. Can not find a squadron patch anywhere. Good memories. Jim Henthorn

Charles Seevers: To Walter Griswold: I was at Goose from Jan'57 to Oct'57 as a E6 and E9 Weapons control tech. I remember the big snow. We had to shovel the walks and throw the snow up about 12 feet above our heads. w6qwn@yahoo.com
April 10, 2001 6:30PM

Walter Griswold: I was stationed in GooseBay March 15th, 1956- March 1957, the year of the big snow, 156 inches with the 59th FIS. Bunkmates were Tom Tierney, Carl Hall, and Jack Dressen. I would love to hear from anyone stationed at Goosebay during that time. It was great to see the old place again and the F89.

\"Pintail 25\": Chad, your message was "Unable to be delivered" because your return address was not quite correct. Here it is again: Hi Chad, it was real nice of you to write an entry in our guest book. Click on http:www.fly.to/59thfis and it will take you to some very nice old pictures with stories written below. I was a young man in the Air Force in 1952 and 1953 and I was based at Goose Bay, Labrador in Canada in the North East Air Command. Our outfit, the 59th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was sent up there, (with one detachment at Thule, Greenland,) to stop Russian Bombers from attacking North Amerika. Write again, "Pintail 25" (My military call-sign when we were flying up north.)

chad: hi well im beginning to like the idea of oneday flying. Im really into all types of aircraft. From the p-51's to the f-22. I love the fact that they can fly. i've never flown before but i want to. Is there anything you can tell me. Maybe the joy of flying you have. Maybe one of your misions. I also am really into history. So one of your missions would be very exciting. well bye

Barry Mercer: I grew up "on the Goose". My father was a member and later the OIC of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police stationed on the "Canadian" side. Not a great deal to do with the US folk I' afraid. < although he and Mom sure enjoyed meals and entertainment at the Officers club > Yes - I have memories of the 59th... sometimes a scramble would drown out our teachers at the front of the classroom. After all, we were not too far from 27! I sure recall the 102 and the 106 aircraft. I remember the "elephant walks" too... the KC 97's hydraulics would squeal when they paraded around the flight line. Nice memories. Thanks.
March 8, 2001 11:35AM

Glen E. (Ed \"Smitty\") Smith: I found three references for the 1954-55 period at the Goose. There are no e-mail addresses for Elfred (Al-"Feets") Kramer nor Nick ("The Greek") Vafiadis who were in the 59th FIS. There is a request from C.C. James for info on his uncle, Curt ("Jellybean") Stegner, who died in a tragic plane crash after he had finished his tour and was awaiting rotation to the States. I have e-mailed him some info on Curt. Contact me at tworet@home.com. I'd like to hear from all of you.

Glen E. (Ed) Smith: I was an RO in the 59th FIS at Goose from April, 1954 through March, '54. We had 94B's until January, '55 when we went to Hill AFB, UT and brought back F'89D's. It was a joint venture with Harmon, AFB who also got 89D's at the same time. That was the highlight of the year. We also won the NEAC basketball and softball tournaments (I was MVP in softball!) at Pepperell and went to Bolling AFB, Wash, D.C. for the AF World-wide softball tournament. We didn't win that one. Any info on reunions for this year?

MSgt Mike Shapiro: Great site! I really enjoyed seeing the old photos. Do you have any additional Thule AB related photos/information? I'm doing research for a new musium at Thule and am planning on building a model F-89D. Did the 59th FIS fly any other aircraft type from Thule? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gordon Gatlin: I was stationed at the 'Goose' from sept 55 to sept 56. Worked most of my hitch as the alert hanger crew chief on the night shift. If I listen real close I can still hear the ROAR of the J35's in afterburner, getting a couple of our F89D's in the air for a late-night scramble. My fondest memories are of the weekend pinocle games we had that lasted from after evening chow on Friday till Sunday night. I rotated back to the states with my two room mates, Don Hasbrouck (Crookston, Minnesota)& Lloyd Lambert, (Kirbyville, Texas). We'd been together since starting basic training at Lackland AFB. We swore to keep in touch but went our separate ways upon hitting the states. I'd really enjoy hearing from either of them if they stumble upon this note.

It's nice to revisit the Goose by pictures after all of these years. I would like to hear from anyone who worked in the AGE shop the time I was there.
November 6, 2000 9:06AM

Jim Owen: Great site, I really enjoyed my 15 months at the Goose. I worked on the F-102 flightline from May of 64 to July of 65. Still remember the great fishing camps....and the cold winter.....

Harry Dawson: NCOIC of Airborne Electronic Shop 06/64 thru 09/66. Still kicking at 72.
October 28, 2000 2:09PM

Ron Zimm (Fullalove): Your site is FANTASTIC! I was in the 59th FIS @ GAB from 10/58 to 2/60 as a radar tech on the 89-j. I had just turned 19 when I arrived and left 15 months later and still was not 21. One night close to enlistment completion I split my ID card and changed the 9 in 1939 to an 8 so I appeared to be 21. The AP caught me and I was to have reported to the first shirt on Monday AM. Overnight a fire broke out at Pinetree and I volunteered to fight it. My altered ID is buried in a million pieces scattered throughout Pinetree. No eveidence; no conviction! Then came time to check out/clear for McGuire for discharge. And the last stop was that First Shirt. A black guy with a stogie in his mouth. He signed off and looked at me and asked, "where is your ID?" and laughed. I have many other Goose stories. I remain friends with the BX girls; especially Joan Rhodes who married (now divorced) my roomate Howard at the Goose. Does anyone know what ever happened to another roomate Earl Raphael Boykins (Ray). My e-mail is << ronzimm@aol.com >>. Would love to hear from others.

T.Wayne Evans: Sir your pictorial of Goose Bay and the 59th was outstanding. I was in the 59th from June 54 until June 55.Col. Bill Shomo was my squadron commander. Thanks again for the great web page and if you here of anyone with a 59th squadron patch or know where I might obtain one I would appriciate it.
October 7, 2000 11:57PM

Stephen E. Grant: I went to Goose and was assigned to the AGE Shop with George Huff as supervisor. He rotated and I became the NCOIC. Arrived in 1962 and left in 1965. The 59th was good for me, I made M/Sgt there. Great to see some of the old pictures.
September 25, 2000 10:23AM

bob arnold: I have been hunting for info on the 59fis for a while. The pictures sure brought back memories. I worked on the radar on the 102's from May 1965 until Aug 1966. Sure would like to hear from some of my old buddies if they happen on this site, like Bob Kline, Sgt Trevor (not sure if that is spelled right) .
September 5, 2000 9:23PM

Chuck Seevers: Neat site. I was a E6 and MG 12 Fire Control Tech on the F89D's and F89J's in 1957.
August 18, 2000 8:50PM

Jim Omillian: I was assigned to the 59th FIS Instrument Shop from '63 to '65. Contrary to the military way I volunteered for some extra duty getting a newly acquired "boat" ready for squadron use. Ssgt Cooper, Tsgt Royce Burrage, and I spent many days (some even sober) during most of my tour reconditioning a Newfoundland fishing boat and running it all over Goose Bay and up into Lake Melville, Baby Grand and Grand Lake, and to the mount of the Kenamu River. We took anybody, anywhere, for any reason we could get away with! Even got stranded up the Kenamu with two commanders' kids and got picked up in a Pedro after my commander came looking for us, dutch-rolling up the river in one of the lowest-flying F102's it was ever my pleasure to see. Nothing but fond memories and lots of photos (mainly off on the Canadian side, docks, Rabbit Island, etc.) - wonder whatever happened to the two boys and if they ever got used to chewing Days Work without turning green.

Mike O'Rourke: Enjoyed the site. I was an Intercept Control Tech at HALFPINT c. 63/64. Went with the 59th to Wm. Tell '64 at Tyndall AFB. We hit more Q-2C's then the other folks but were logged as last place. Semms that was the year ADC wanted an ANG Duce unit (PIT) to win all of the marbles. Although we were last in the score, we were first in boozing. A finer bunch of people could not be found anywhere. Still got my "bat patch" from the team. Also have a bunch of photos of the era that I would be happy to pass on if you like. They include about 20 from WT63 and have name associated with faces. I still correspond with my old NCOIC (CMSGT McKinney) and the WD I worked for (COL Don Bunce). We are all retired now but I remember them fondly. Kevin Burns: Fritz, always a great place to come back to. Love the old photo's. Thanks for stopping by my site. I noticed that your first pages is Netscape. Might I suggest you add the Netscape guestbook with viewer. The more people that see the entries, just maybe the more you have for the 50th. Guest books are normally on the first (home) page. Other than that "minor" glitch I simply LOVE the site. I miss OTIS. I was there from 73-75. Kevin

Capt Dave Muralt: Greetings From The Goose! I am the Canadian Forces Public Affairs Officer for 5 Wing Goose Bay, on the south side in what was formerly Goose Air Base. I was very impressed with you site, and would like to print some of your photos for display in the Labrador Military Museum, which is the grand title of the little museum we have here on the base. We don't have nearly as much information or as many photos of the south side during the USAF years as we would like to have. I hope to hear from you soon. Keep 'em flying! Capt Dave Muralt

Elfred H. (Al) Kramer: I was a pilot in the 59th from April 1954 to April 1955. I ferried one of the last F-94B's from Goose to California as we were transitioning to the F-89D. In June 1954 I was vectored by Pinetree to a BOAC Boeing Stratocruiser west of Goose that had one large and several smaller unidentified flying objects flying formation on its left wing. Just before I got to them, the BOAC Captain announced that the objects were veering off to the north. Neither Pinetree nor us picked up anything on our radars. The event did cause a certain amount of commotion on the Goose. This is event is now known as the Centaurus affair in books on UFO's. Al Kramer Lt. Col., USAF, Ret.
December 25, 1999 7:37AM

Nick Vafiadis: What a wonderful suprise to see a page dedicated to the 59th. My 12 months were 6/54 thru 6/55. We started flying F-94Bs and made the transition to F-89Ds over the 54/55 holiday season.Flew the 94s to the San Fransisco graveyard and came back to the 89s. At the time the "cold war" was almost hot and we flew countless intercepts. All in all a wonderful and unforgetable experience. Thanks so much for posting this material. Hopefully you will get many more contributions from some of the guys.

December 5, 1999 5:18PM

Jack Pranitis: Why aren't post 1960 included in the 59th guest book and included in the history of the squadron. I was NCOIC of the electric shop from 4/62 til 7/63, we had F-102 aircraft and were involved in the Cuban missle crisis. Some of our aricraft were deplyed to MacDill to sit alert. Enjoyed the 15 months of that tour and met some great guys. Looking forward of possibly hearing from them.

Bob Caggiano: I've been searching for anything on the 59th FIS, great to see this site! Your time pre-dates my sojourn to Goose by about 12 years. The photos are great. I used to work Movements Identification at Melville AFS (641st AC&W). We used to love to scramble F102's from the 59th at Goose. My hat is off to you guys, it was damned cold to be sitting in aircraft waiting word to go aloft! You may be interested in the Pinetree Line site, which has some related information about Goose Bay and other sites.
