Trellene August 25, 2009 5:32AM KEITH SPANGLER: Chuck and the Hung Jury Band, I wanted to provide you with a final update on the Pennsylvania Perimeter Ride Against Cancer - the six-day, 500-mile bicycle adventure that I completed on August 8. Website: www.pprac.net Sixty three bicyclists road the 540-mile route from Burlington, VT to Palmerton, PA, August 2 thru August 8, raising more than $150,000 for cancer. This year marks a milestone for the PPRAC event which was started back in 1983. Since then the ride has raised ONE MILLION DOLLARS for cancer and Dream Come True - a support organization for critically ill children. I personally can't say enough about the ride and the experience I had. Riding an average of 7 hours on the bike each day, sleeping on gym floors and eating at American Legions and VFWs each night, we covered some very scenic roads and visited some very neat towns along the way to Palmerton. I personally recorded more than 31,000 feet of climbing (hills) and burned an average 5,000 to 6,000 calories a day during the ride. There were several outstanding 5 and 7-mile ascents. One shorter climb, probably the toughest, was Airport Road which went "up" for a half mile, but at 19 to 24 percent gradient. I met some really nice people on the ride and heard a lot of very touching stories from cancer survivors and people who it has touched. The ride was more than a bike ride Chuck, it was an emotional journey of personal experiences with pain and suffering. I learned a lot about cancer and a lot about myself on the ride. Thank you and the band, and those from the Winner's Circle who supported my fundraising event for the ride. The money you helped me raise will certainly make a difference in the fight against this deadly disease. Hat's off to you all. July 12, 2009 12:21PM KEITH SPANGLER: To the Hung Jury Band and my friends at the Winner's Circle Saloon; I wanted to provide you an update about your donations to the Pennsylvania Perimeter Ride Against Cancer (PPRAC). The six-day, 500-mile bicycle ride is scheduled to get underway on August 2, as we broad a bus that will take us to the start point in Burlington, VT. (see website: www.pprac.net) So far, the 63 participants who will take part in this adventure have raised $91,000 of the $150,000 fundraising goal for 2009 PPRAC. The $150,000 goal would mark a milestone for the PPRAC ride because it would signify a million dollars raised by PPRAC since its start in 1983. On July 3, 1983, 20 riders left on a bicycle journey that followed the 1,000-mile perimeter of Pennsylvania. This inaugural PPRAC raised $20,000 for the Lehigh Valley Unit of the American Cancer Society. Today, the PPRAC is organized on an every-other-year format with riders covering 500 miles in six days of cycling through some of the most scenic roads leading to Pennsylvania. Thirteen tours to date have raised over $896,000 to fight cancer. I wanted to share this update with you because I sincerely appreciate your support and to tell you that I am training hard to meet the challenges that face me on this very demanding event. Training/Preparation In June, I participated in the hardest ride of my life on a three-day tour called the Tour De Monte. The ride took me over 18,500 feet of mountains and hills between Maryland and Chambersburg, Pa. I want you to know that many things went through my head as I turned the pedals up those mountains. Many of those thoughts are personal, but I can tell you that my "thoughts" were about those who I love and the battles I have seen others beat. The thoughts were a blessing because they helped me to keep pedalling up and up over the 265 miles that I recorded on that three-day ride. I must say, it was a great training ride to test my fitness, my mind and my bike. Trivia To date I have more than 4,700 miles on the road and many hours in the gym training for the PPRAC ride. I am ready for the PPRAC challenge so wish me luck! Thank You for everything! The event's success was behund my expectations. In three short hours the patrons and the Hung Jury Band memebers donated $400.00 for the fight against Cancer. (Note: I still have checks coming in from people who weren't able to make the event, so.....) That's a lot of giving in these hard economic times and I personally applaud you. I had a lot of people come up to me and thank me for riding the Spin Bike Challenge and I appreciate every word of encourage from each one of you. But, I want you to know that I'm not the one who needs the encouragement; those suffering from Cancer need your support more. Give them a hug and some words of encouragement. I completed the 100-mile Livestrong Challenge bicycle ride on August 26 under mostly sunny skies in Montgomery and Berks Counties, Pa. It was a very interesting and challenging ride. The 8,000 feet of elevation change over the 100 miles of mostly rural roads made for a long, hot day in the saddle. The ride took 6.5 hours of actual ride time (total of 8 hours including rest stops). My average speed was 14.79 mph over the 100-mile course. Probably the most important number of all was the amount of money you helped me raise - $1,886.29. Thanks to all of you who support the me, Livestrong Challenge 2007 and the Lance Armstrong Foundation's fight against cancer. The money you donated will be used wisely I'm sure. Well, as of August 12, my family, friends and local businesses have raised $1,656.29 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the fight against cancer. My goal is still $2,500, but the deadline of August 23 is fast approaching. Whether I make the goal or not I will be riding my bicycle 100 miles on August 26. I promised to do my part and I am going to do it with all of your encouragement behind me. I appreciate everything Hung Jury did for my fundraising campaign at the Winner's Circle Saloon back in June. Everyone how donated their hard earned cash certainly helped encourage my training for the 100 mile bike ride which I'm sure is going to be a challenge. LOL July 16, 2007 7:18AM Keith Spangler: I just wanted to update everyone on my Livestrong Challenge fundraiser activities that Hung Jury and my friends at the Winner's Circle Saloon supported in June. Well, thanks to a lot of people and the Hung Jury Band I have raised $1,576.29 for cancer. My goal is $2,500 so I still have some work to do. My training for the 100-mile bicycle ride to be held in Philadelphia is going well. I recently spent 5 days in Virginia training. So far this year [since January 07] I have logged approximately 3,300 miles on the road, so things are going well. Starting in July I have increased my physical training at the gym to include more leg work. The Livestrong Challenge bike ride, which is scheduled for August 26, will included 8,000 feet of elevation change, so this extra training will be important.
