Colette Weaver Crawford: howdy all TASOK alumni. We need your help. My sister, Cindy and I are traveling to the East Coast and driving through NC,SC, GA and FL, maybe going north as far as DC. We would love to visit other TASOK folks along the way between visiting family. There will be four of us, as our daughters travel with us. The dates of our travel are July 20-31. Do any of you live in or near Washington, DC, Charleston, SC, Savannah, GA or places in between? Thanks for your responses.

Jeanie Clark Trout: Dear TASOK friends,
I am so glad to see that Louise Senga has found our TASOK Picture Trail website. I remember her from the TASOK Class of 1975. Louise, tell us where you live now and what you are doing.
I want to mention I believe a TASOK reunion/Celebration is being planned for Kinshasa in 2010-2011. TASOK will be 50 years old in 2011. Please be looking for more info about this TASOK Fete in the future. Be saving your $ and put it on your calendar!!!!!!!!
When I was in Congo in October, 2008, I had time to look thru the many TASOL yearbooks at MPH. I had not seen so many in one place. I had not seen the 1985 TASOL. Larry Fountain, etc were Seniors that year.
It was well done. If you are the editor, please take credit. I copied Swahili(?) proverbs from the yearbook.
Chombo hakiendi ila kwa nyenzo. ( Cooperation is needed to do great things.) Bahati mi chudi. (Luck is a matter of effort.) Akili ni nyewelo, kila mtu ana zake. (Brains are like hair, everyone has his own kind.) Mwenze njas hami miiko (Nothing stops the ambitious person.) Imara ya jembe kain goje shamba.(The toughness of the hoe is tested in the garden.) Ukubwa ni jaa. (The one at the top has to take a lot of abuse.)
Ni foe la mvue, miku fu la jua (Do me a favor during the rainy season, and I shall do you a favor during the dry season.) Ukicha kuta jwa hutatenda jambo (If you are afraid to be talked about, you will not do anything.)
May God bless all of you out there in TASOK land.
Please write something here if you take the time to visit PictureTrail.com/tasok Love, Jeanie Clark Trout, 1974

Jeanie Clark Trout: Many of you know that a Baptist delegation travelled to Congo for 3 weeks in October. We were there from
Oct. 7 -24, 2008 We went to Kimpese to help our American Baptist mission station celebrate 100 years of mission work from 1908 to 2008. It is now called CECO.
Many of us know it by Kimpese EPI. It is the school/educational part of Kimpese. It includes primary, middle and high schools. It has a Bible Institute and a
University. I am posting a Picasa website done by Alice Moore, Bill Moore's mother. On the website, you will see Kimpese where we spent a weekend Oct 10-12.
You will also see Kinshasa, TASOK, Sona Bata, Vanga, Kikongo and Nsona Mpangu. We were at Sona Bata and Kikongo (Glen and Rita Chapman) for one hour only.
We want to share these pictures with you.
I may try to do another website as we have many more pictures to share. We visited the bonobos. There are 64 bonobos just outside Kinshasa. Please google bonobos and you can read more about them.
We had a wonderful trip! We stayed at MPH while in Kinshasa. We stayed at a mission guesthouse at Kimpese with Wendy Bernhard, our IM missionary.
Here is the website. Enjoy our pictures. Jean C. Trout

mary sanichas: Beth, Ed Trahan definitely had a younger brother--there were 8 kids in the family (or maybe 8 people total, anyway, it was a Big family)!! Princie (Lillian) was my best friend in 1966 (6th grade). Then they were transferred to Livorno, Italy. I remember going to a big outdoor café in Leopoldville/Kinshasa, waiting for the weekly mail to arrive and reading letters from Princie in Italy.
Princie's older brother closest to our age was Mike. I think her older brothers were into stereos and Peter, Paul and Mary. But also mopeds, horrible mopeds which tragically killed other boys from our school. The Trahans had a big Rhodesian Ridgeback dog named Joté chained in front of their house. We carpooled together in the back of an open military jeep to school. Once my tailbone was so sore from falling off a horse at the Belgian riding club--made me realize just how bumpy the jeep was. This was of course in the days before seatbelts--you either hung on or fell out. The missionary kids traveled in VW vans they called "COMBIES"--I always wondered why they called them Combies. Why??
Another horse-related memory is that they gave horses unpeeled 1/2 bananas as treats and they had THE most terrorizing (and exhilirating!) trail rides you can Possibly imagine. You were handed a horse, given a leg up and had only seconds to adjust your stirrups before heading out at what seemed like breakneck speed up and down ungodly steep hills, over jumps through the woods, then trotting down a beautiful wide trail, across great expanses at a gallop. In the arena was no picnic either. They did precision drills with horses head to tail at the canter, and I didn't know the commands! My sister got a terrible concussion falling off and being trampled during their big "Wild West Show" when they set off fireworks while the horses galloped behind the wild west town façade in the dark (they hadn't rehearsed with fireworks and of course cowboys don't wear helmets)…
I live in a beautiful place now with my 2 horses (and Muscovy ducks and chickens), am involved in natural horsemanship and natural horsekeeping--a dream come true--but was happily digging in my compost pile the other day when out of nowhere le Mal d'Afrique struck me again. I am so fortunate to have lived there, such an intensely wonderful place at such an incredible time.

Beth Hester: Totally forgot to mention Ed Trahan another important member of the Class of '66. His Dad was also military and he had a younger brother at the school as well.
September 2, 2008 8:14AM
Beth Hester: TASOK 1966 -- Saw Mary Saniches' email and realized I remember her and her parents! My parents were with the US Embassy too. I was only at TASOK for one year, but it was memorable and formative for me. Our Senior Class only had seven (briefly 8) members: Dan Culp (Becky's older brother), John Rogers (older brother of several Rogers -- including Chis), Mario Ryan (older brother of Cathy Lynne Ryan and Ronnie, who finished school in Lagos as I recall), Larry Janz (with whom I'm in touch), Karen Friesen (I still have an invitation to her birthday party December 1, 1965, at the home of her parents, the Irvin Friesens on Avenue Helene, Binza!) and Linda Weeks. Am also in touch with Elizabeth Lorentzen, who was a year or two behind us. For a few months we were joined by Nolly Juma. If anyone from that era is on this list, would love to hear from you.

Jackson Reams: TASOK girls soccer rocks! Google led me to this web page - I was searching for who Sandy Bartel might be and bingo - found Sandy's name and Sara Rich's name appearing in the same line. I know Sara well and when she's determined to do something -- IT HAPPENS! She just raised a gagle of money to help her soccer team go to an international tournament in Johannesburg. Look out world - TASOK girls soccer will soon be on the map.

Stephane Gripari: Great site although did not go myself to TASOK but knew many friends who did.
April 9, 2008 1:55PM
Patty Kim-Scott: Marvelous to have this guestbook. Was trolling through before sending the link to Sara Rich, one of TASOK's current teachers and coach of girls' soccer (the new "Sandy Bartel" for those in their near-dotage!). We haven't even met but are on email distribution for current and past players of the Virginia Women's Rugby Football Club of which I was a founding member player (ah... yes, that's correct) . I was intrigued by Sara's reference to coaching girls' soccer at TASOK. Ears perk up... hmmm ... NINI WANA? And there you have it, another link. But it is possible that her students get to play in proper athletic gear, i.e. shoes and socks and shorts etc!

Beauregard clan: Was looking through an old TASOK school annual and decided to do a web search. Nice to see pictures of the school again after 33 years. Anybody remember the Beauregards; Angel, Brad and Mike? Post a comment on this site or email me at Boraydog@aol.com. We were only there from 70-72, but it was a great and very memorable three years.

Amy Meyers Nicolai '73: Nice to see the "beach babes" photos from Saint George Island, Florida. What a great time we had - a beautiful house arranged by Faith, lots of good food and drink and company. I loved seeing Patty again, and Carol, and getting to Charity as a "real person" and not only Faith's little sister. :)
The years at TASOL/TASOK were good ones for the most part, and I am grateful for the good education and the good fun. Those were very special times. Memories, in no particular order... King the dog barking at the C&MA hostel... peanut butter and banana sandwiches... Fantas up by the statue of Stanley on hazy evenings... running down that hill at full speed, with gloriosa lilies tangled in the brush... sitting by the little chapel next to the river at ABFMS... listening to "Cecilia" by Simon & Garfunkel at the pool near (or in, perhaps?) the Presidential Palace... seeing the astronauts who walked on the moon... watching our French teacher freak out when the BMS cockroaches we put in her desk drawers flew out... sneaking out of church to go down to the river... washing the glass slatted windows of the ABFMS hostel... playing hide and seek in the dark at the Canadian Baptist hostel... sitting at my desk watching the very first raindrops of the rainy season fall fat and glossy on the dust... squeaking my way through band... all the sad, funny, poignant, rowdy, sober, hysterical, lyrical, and luminescent memories of a childhood. I have no doubt that "normal" childhoods have similar experiences. But this was my childhood and I am so lucky to have had it.

laurie robinson: I'm responding to earlier emails asking about Chris Robinson. He didn't attend TASOK but my brother Nick and I did - we lost Chris to muscular dystrophy in 2001, about 35 years after doctors initially predicted he would die. Have to say, in spite of that nasty disease, Chris was the most uncomplaining ever. Would that we could all be that brave. Wherever Chris is, he's one of the best souls anyone could ever know.

Jeanie Clark Trout: Hey TASOK friends, alumni and all TASOK African Queens out there, We had a fabulous beach reunion in St. Georges, FL. Fourteen beach babes made it to the beach on March 2-5, 2007. We had a wonderful time connecting and bonding again after 30 years for most of us. Some of us had kept up thru the years.
We talked, laughed, looked at old TASOK yearbooks and drank a lot of coffee. We did swim some but the water was freezing on March 3!!!!!!! We hope more of you will join us next year somewhere. Keep posted!!!!!
I just want to mention another TASOK reunion.
TASOK Classes of 80,81,82 are hosting a TASOK reunion in Berkeley Springs, WV July 19-23, 2007
Anyone is invited. They are also inviting teachers of those years. If interested, contact Suzanne L. Collier at

Judith Wiley: It was wonderful viewing all the pictures taken of the TASOK reunions. I graduated Class of '78 and my brother Wendell the Class of '79. I hold wonderful memories of my years in Zaire - '74 - '79. My Mother is back working at the Embassy in Kinshasa and will be there through September 07.
I was hoping to join the "African Queen's" on their Reunion @ St. George's Island, but came down with the flu - I did enjoy the photographs immensely. I live in DeFuniak Springs, Florida with my husband Vince.
Take care,

Nick Robinson: Wow, it's great to find this page. I was alerted to it by Jeanie Clark Trout. I had visited various Tasok page incarnations over the years but this one seems to be the one floating around at the moment, so I thought I'd post.
I only attended Tasok for about a year but my sister Laurie was there for a while. I recognise many names that have posted here. But what can I say, I was only 15! And not much into the Tasok loop.
Does anyone remember the following people, or have had contact with them:
Mark Keyser, teacher
Bruce Bayliss, teacher
Sarah Amber
Patty Kim
Helene Tongoc
Steve Smith
Debbie Smith
Fred Dirksen (not sure of his last name--played piano)
Annette Chambers
Mike Beckwith

My son, who is currently in eighth grade wrote a paper last weekend about my years at TASOK. We went on the web to look for pictures of Zaire (now the Congo) and to my surprised I had the wonderful opportunity to vist your website. Many positive memories flew through my head. mary sanichas: I was in 6th and 7th grades in 1966-67 (father was in US Air Force). It broke my heart to leave the Congo. We said "bingo, bango, bongo,I don't wanna leave the Congo." It was so wonderful to be in an international community. I remember the older students put on South Pacific and other musicals. The missionary kids were especially talented. Many lived in a hostel at the school while parents were in the bush. Our 6th grade teacher, Miss Helen Boldt cried and ran out of the room once when we sang 4-part harmony poorly, I've always felt bad about that. Miss Boldt actually BOLTED out the door, we were stunned. She seemed like a tragic figure. Also she had us draw each other which was meaningful to me. I remember drawing a boy posing as a sprinter ready to take off. I later majored in art. Someone brought a boa constrictor to school that was killed with a chicken halfway swallowed. Does anyone know where Pam Weaver is (from big missionary family)? Celestine Pepe? She spoke about 7 languages and sometimes got tonguetwisted when she was excited. Her father was Italian working for Pan Am, mother Greek, she spoke Egyptian from having lived there, then French and English like most of us, but also Lingala. 7th grade was in the newly built school in a different location with lots of cement and different teachers for each subject. We had really good teachers for the most part, mostly missionaries who were passionate about the topics they taught. I loved the Congo, sounds like things are terrible there now but that the people are still wonderful. It's true we were nearly evacuated several times, but they were still the happiest years of my childhood. It was magical from the moment the airplane landed and we smelled the burning landscape on the drive at night into (then) Leopoldville, it was the season to burn the land. Then the intense smell in the market in town the next morning and the happy music and rhythms, the incredible vastness and beauty. The sunsets. An avocado a day! It was paradise. The school was a big part of that. Please email me if you went to school with me!

Helga (Stixrud) Lewis: Hi to everyone out there from 1973-74. I spent more of my years upcountry at CS and only 1 year at TASOK. Of course, had it been my choice, I would have stayed forever or at least until graduation. What a fabulous upbringing we all share -growing up in Zaire...I've been married 21 years to husband, Pete, who was an air force brat and spent childhood years in Panama Canal zone. We have 3 children. Melanie is a junior at Clemson University, Chris is a junior in HS and Zach is an 8th grade in MS. We met in Texas and moved to Simpsonville, SC just south of Greenville in 1994. I work part time as a real estate appraiser and the other part time raising two teenage boys. If any of you have teenagers, you know what I mean... Those of you that I knew in Zaire, email me. I'd love to chat..

Laurie Bowers Connolly: Wonderful photos, looks like you all had a great time. How fun to see how the "big kids" from AIMM hostel grew up, like Phil Martens, Tim Bertsche, Faith and Charity, as well as everyone else. Lynn and Jeanne, well done. John, thanks for posting these photos for us to enjoy!
