negativityscenic: golly, I have travel envy. I also have photo envy, and now I am inspired to buy film for my old Canon AE-1 -- I'm such a copy cat! 'cept the last thing I got from the Salvation Army was a Hammond chord organ which requires the strength of at least two men to move, so I cannot copy you on that.

Marian and Roger: We just finished going through your Austria trip. We were there with Idyll in l996 and stayed in Werfen. We saw the castle all the time from our bedroom window and lights were on it 'til midnight each night. We saw it lighted even from our bed! But the point here is that we live in Fairport! So when we got to the end and you announce that you are home in Rochester, we just had to write to you and say "Hi Neighbor!"
December 3, 2003 3:21PM
Deeskogrl: :P You should do a DC walrus photo safari. Then you could expand it. There's a really cute train station in a small town call Manassas that walrus could pose in. :P nerdling.

Aaron: I loved the photos. Was out in that direction just a few weeks ago. The rock you refer to on Route 666 is called Church Rock. I hiked over to the hole in its base - carved by Anasazi as a granary, it is filled with the excrement of cows lounging in the shade! It was about 1/4-1/2 mile hike from the road. Much further than I thought! It looks like you had a great trip!!
June 13, 2003 8:23AM
Taquito!: your pictures are awesome and a suuperrr cool idea! when im old enough to travel around..maybe i should do something similar!

May 13, 2003 2:33PM
Bug Girl: I loved the walrus vacation ablum, but I wanted to see the walrus in every photo, especially the grave yard, that would have been a hoot, to have the walrus, kind off on the side, not on the graves however.

Grandma Dorethy: hello my sweet children! What a lovely couple you both together! It's wonderful to see how much you love each other. It's a long time ago that somebody loved me.. You see my husband died 20 years ago! I'm a lonely widow and a few years ago I didn't want to live anymore.. But then I found something fantastic.. THIS! the internet. I like it a lot and you can find me everyday at "The Net" It's wonderful to see what you can do here! And your pictures are so lovely! I can't stop looking at them! Bye my sweet children!! A big hug from Dorethy

David Bohaska: Andy: I'm jealous of your walrus: he's seen some
nifty places.
I know a paleontologist who carries his Paleontologist
Barbie and posses
her at fossil localities he has visited and worked at.
I believe he took
her to Egypt; he did forget to carry it to New
Zealand. (I keep my
Paleontologist Barbie in her original package with all
of her field tools
and dinosaurs.)

That guy with the nametag: Hey Andy, sweet idea. Stuffed animals are great conversation pieces. Much like wearing a nametag all the time, which is what I do, carrying around a cute toy definately encourages people to be friendlier. What a great front porch! Good luck with your endeavors. Much love

My husband & I spent a wonderful week in Austria (including Salzburg) in 2000 and it was, without a doubt, our best vacation ever! Such an overlooked country, don't you think? dennystar: I just wanted to say that I loved your pictures. I'm from Connecticut (and first of all, it's too bad New Haven was your only stop, because the rest of the state is awesome)... anyways this summer I went on a cross-country road trip, and stopped at a lot of the same places as you, such as the Badlands Nat'l Park, Crazy Horse Monument, and a few other places as well. I loved seeing just how big and beautiful this country really is. Thanks for sharing your experience.

kesavan: Dear Mr.Andy,
What a marvellous and splendid journey you took me through your photo album feature! Many thanks for your kind gesture and I am particularly happy to see such tourist resorts although my chances of visiting them are as little as a flickering candle in a Siberian blizzard.
Thanking you once again,
R.Kesavan.
February 8, 2003 4:16AM
Bob Chambers: Thank you for sharing your New England trip. Was a little disappointed that you didn't have a picture of New Bedford Massachusettts (my birth place) but I have lived in NC most all my life. Oh yes I have had Moxie---thought it was the best soda in the world---we would go to MA every summer and that is the first thing my grandmother would buy for me. Was up there several years ago---that stuff is terrible---how our tast changes.

Robb Balch: The reunion was great, BUT it was NOTHING comared to that Wed night BINGO GAME!!! The women there were incredible. I also learned a very important lesson during that BINGO game. "NEVER LAUGH when the caller says 69".
I really enoyed the photos.

Thank you much for giving me a link to the past, I really enjoyed the reunion pictures and I was surprised at the memories they brought back. I encourage any of your classmates that might remember me to write, I would love to hear from everyone. Here is a current picture of me---> http://hometown.aol.com/doe1464/myhomepage/index.html Thanks again! Keep in touch!

Sharon: Your walrus TOTALLY ROCKS!!!! I love him!!! Does he have a name? A couple summers ago I did a similar thing with a little green rubber finger puppet monster named George on a family trip. George visited Mammoth Cave, had a riverboat ride on the Mississippi, and rode rollercoasters at Six Flags among other things. I think that George and your walrus should meet...or at least exchange addresses :0) Anyways, thanx for sharing your way cool pics. God Bless you and the walrus!!

May 13, 2002 3:12PM
Gary Rice: Thanks for sharing your photos, the notes were fun. My family
(Me, my wife, 14 year old daughter and 9 year old son) will be in Werfen in
August for two weeks. I would enjoy picking your brain as we ramp up our
research. We love to be active on vacations, for example we took a bike and
barge tour in Holland last year and 3 years ago had a blast hiking in
Switzerland. Getting insight into sights off the beaten path would be great (like
your favorite hike, a neat shop in a town near Werfen, places where the masses
weren't!, stuff not easily found in a guidebook). We have found that it's better
for us to slow the trip down, enjoy the views from the apartment, walk around
and get a feel for the country, as opposed to being on the run every day with a
sight-seeing checklist. If you want to call me instead of emailing, I can be
reached during work hours. We live in Massachusetts. Thanks, Gary Rice
May 13, 2002 2:18PM
Carl Peters: Your photographs make me want to abandon Switzerland and give Austria a try. But I have mixed feelings about the walrus. Best wishes for the rest of your lives together.
May 13, 2002 12:07PM
Eleanor and Dick: Eleanor grew up in Rochester where her father taught at West High. The last surviving member or her family was an aunt who died at age 99 who lived on Almond Rd. just outside of Hornell. When we used to visit her there we often took her to Alfred to the Collegiate for lunch. We were in Salzburg in April for a few days with and Elderhostel and had a one-day excursion into the lake country. Our next Untour will be in Switzerland in August.
May 13, 2002 11:43AM
Marion: Your pictures are wonderful -- I'm heading to France in the fall and will certainly consider a "field trip" to Austria.
May 13, 2002 11:25AM
Don Nelson: Hi, Andy--Good technology. It makes all the difference that you used cutlines to explain each photo and the subject's significance. I'm a retired "country editor" and photojournalism was one of my many duties/hobbies, and I learned the importance of taking adequate notes while shooting. Good job.
May 13, 2002 11:14AM

Ron: Andy - I just checked out the walrus pix - very nice! I've seen the book with the lawn gnome, and it's a brilliant idea.
For my wedding cake, we painted up two Fisher Price people to look like us, which was funny all by itself. Then, someone at the wedding party kidnapped them, then brought them all over the world for the next year or so for business trips. The kidnappers eventually sent them back to us in a box with a set of pictures from Alaska, Australia, and some other exotic places, all with our little people. They're in our safety deposit box now.
