waynemingo: Hi, Janet! Do you know where I can get a cutting of Granger's Interlude? I used to grow this plant back in the mid 1980s and actually won Best in Show with it at a large Houston show in 1986. I would love to grow this variety again. Your photos are fabulous! Thanks, Wayne

Eileen: The AV Brat Pack brought me here when I say one of your posts. You had the link to your webpage. What an AWESOME site you have. Your violets are georgeous. I especially like your problems and pest section. It is very enlightening. I'm new to collecting AVs and I have bookmarked your site. I will be refering back to it quite often to choose which violets to get first. My little list just got much larger after looking at all your pictures. I still have to go back and check out rest of your website, but wanted to let you know that you have a FANTASTIC site. Thank you.

Dean: The African Violets brought me here but the Bearded Iris and Daylilys kept me here even longer. Just wonderful photos!!
December 1, 2008 1:23AM

Michelle: Your violets are just beautiful! I've found your albums to be very helpful, in that I can see more of the plant than most websites show. Also, I greatly appreciated the album on the problems and pests. You have some AVs I've been trying to find. Would you be willing to sell some leaves?
July 31, 2008 10:43AM

Barb: WOW What a fabulous collection of violets! Very impressive, your photograph's are really nice. I especially liked the collection of different leaf types and variegation. I agree with others in that line art is one thing, but a photograph/description is so much better. Especially for us newbies just starting out building our collections. Now I don't feel quite so lost when reading descriptive details on violets... Thanks for sharing your lovely collection with all of us. Barb

Judy from NJ: Janet, Your pictures are stunning. I'm especially intrigued by the section on seedlings under evaluation. They're all beautiful, but #22 is a real stunner. How is that one doing? Do you sell leaves, by any chance? Regards, Judy
October 15, 2007 6:09PM

DC from Daytona: Thank you for your leaves page! When I was starting, all these descriptions, especially the odd ones, confused me to no end. They still do on occasion. A picture is worth a 1000 words and if I'd had these photos 20 years ago, I wouldn't have been so confused for so long! The drawings in AVSA Mag just weren't enough. So, Thank you!

Charlene in OK: Your pictures are gorgeous. Not only are your violets absolutely flawless looking, but the photography is breathtaking. My wishlist just increased substantially (GRRRR) I would give anything for one of each of your NOIDS, they are unbelievable. Of course I love the named varieties, but my biggest joy is in the beauty whether it is a thoroughbread or a mutt, I just want the beauty, and your NOIDS are that) Blessings to you, and you have a wonderful bunch of pictures. Charlene

Lisa: What great photos! You've inspired me to go home tonight and take better care of my plants. I was wondering if I could ask you a favor. I'm responsible for updating a FAQ at an African violet Web site: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/afrviolet/ Unfortunately, we can't put any links in our FAQ. Would you consider letting us use your photos of the different leaf types if we gave you credit?

sandy: Hi Janet, I came across your picture album looking for a certain african violet on the AVSA website. I saw your name as the photographer and then I found your website. I am stunned. Your violets are just so beautiful!! I recently became interested in growing them just for show around my house because they were the first plants that actually survived my “green thumb”. I now have about 15 and will be adding a plant stand that can hold many more. The quality of my plants is nothing compared to yours, but I love looking at all the colors of flowers I do get. I was interested in the chimera called Lady Elizabeth. My daughter, Elizabeth, passed away several months ago at the age of 8 and her favorite color was purple. When I saw this violet on the AVSA website I knew it would be a perfect remembrance of my daughter. I was wondering if you would be able to sell me a starter plant (since it’s a chimera). Thanks for allowing us to see your wonderful work. Sandy

January 27, 2004 3:45PM

Ruthiris: Janet: It had been the first time I look over your albums and I can tell you of the wonderful time I had. Your pictures of sports are really full of beauty. Your album of leaves types is an educational one. It had been a real pleasure! Some of my favorites pictures of AV are in groups: located in windows, near furniture, in stands, near other plants, etc. Do you have some of them? Well, Janet. I think that your experience with the AV is big. It seems as you love and enjoy them a lot. Thanks for the opportunity to enjoy your albums in Picture Trail! Sunshine from the Caribbean, Ruth ;-)
January 27, 2004 3:43PM

Jon K: Hey janet. Just got finished reading your reply to my question about the Optimara violet food. Then I followed the link to your photo pages. Thank you so much for posting them! What beautiful, healthy plants they are! Some of the colors nowadays are absolutely stunning! I never really was too interested in African Violets until fairly recently because the ones they sell in the supermarkets, garden centers, etc., are always the same old plain pinks, purples, and whites, although some of the garden centers in my area have begun to carry some of the more beautiful colors. That's when I started to become interested! I can't imagine having over 1000 AV's. That must be like heaven! I only have room on my little plant stand for SIX of them! lol And right now I only have two because I'm waiting to see if I can get them to do well. I have been trying to follow advice given from people in avconnection, gardenweb.com, and Optimara (they have a good web site, and in the garden centers, their violets are always beautiful and packed with blooms). Thanks again for showing off your beauties! -Jon K

Siew Teen: Hi Janet, I think I am spending too much time viewing the pictures, they are so professionally done up. It is so relaxing just viewing the pictures with the music in the background.

Richard G. Racheter: Dear Janet, IK thought that I already signed your guestbook and that I received a very pleasant reply from you -- answering some questions I posed. If not, it is my age that is "pulling tricks!" I raised AV a long time ago and am just getting back to them after some 40 years. Am retired, live alone and pretty well confined to my home -- thus a "new" hobby is just what I need. Was a English teacher and Librarian (college level) for many years, and I love research -- gathering information in notebooks and jotting down opinions. I wounder if I could obtain permission to copy some of your photographs? Am especially excited about the series on leaf types: how I would like to print these examples out on good paper and keep in my AV Notebook for further reference. This would be easier fro me than returning to your site. Please allow me to do this! Do you send a special password to those who get permission? Can hardly wait to add to my information. I take copies from the AVSA site -- photos of plants I especially like. Forgive an old man for rambling on! However, I am still sure I signed up0 before! Is my mind playing tricks. Wonderful site you have. Most sincerely, Richard

TsangSunWah: Dear friend, I am sorry that I have to sign your guest book again. It's the third time that I have been here.I am not going to say that your a.v. are beautiful or lovely.Your a.v. collections are great,of course. But the more important thing is that you have devoted yourself to these precious living plants. No matter you are a professional cultivator or a vendor, your hybridization work is invaluable and a contribution to natural life!!
August 26, 2003 9:05AM

Mr.Tsang Sun WAh (Chinese): I was so happy to visit your Photos Album the other day.Your photos are great and beautiful! I started to upload my a.v.photos after that visit.I used to grow a.v. at school for years. However,I didn't get any names of the a.v.(numbers on pots only) by that time.( except The new bought ones ) Would you be kind enough to help me to identify them and find their names?

Nancy Braun: Janet - As usual, your pictures are beautiful. I would like to place a leaf order with you, but it is going to have to wait until midJune. My husband is retiring in three days and there is a big party at the UW as well as my serving dinner to 40 guests afterwards. I have invited his sister and our Ca. daughter as a surprise and they are staying an additional week. Then we are off to the Sacramento area for another two weeks. Phew!! You asked in my last note if I had any pictures of my two recent registered plants. I have just photos which I haven't tried scanning and sending. Debon's Christmas Morning always is the first to sell out at our sales and Frilly Lilly is right behind it. I have three more first generation plants that I have fallen in love with. I hope they stay true. All my rejects go to Hospice patients who just love them and don't realize that they didn't pass the "Nancy Braun Test". Wish I had room for more serious hybridizing. If you are in the Madison area the second weekend of Oct., please make a point of attending the State AV Show at East Towne Mall. From what I have seen of the pictures on avcconnection (think I have too many c's and not enough n's), our show plants are outstanding. We get buyers from Ill. and Minn. Anyway, thanks for the beautiful pictures...They are an inspiration. Nancy Braun

Evelyn: Thanks so much for sharing your photos. I love your Allegro hybrids, and would like to know how you got started, and any books, etc. that you recommend specifically for AV hybridization -- though there are so many, it is hard to imagine there could be more! Your tip about using little cups for propagation is splendid -- I've been using 3" cups in a coke bottle for each, and it takes up a heck of a lot of room!

Janet Harrod: Dear Janet: Hello! Well, I guess we have at least two things in common. One of course, our first names, and secondly, our love for African Violets. I only visited about three sections of your photos and I was very impressed. Your flowers are absolutely beautiful. I have just recently joined Violet Reflections and am enjoying being a member of this wonderful group, especially to know other people with the same love for Violets as I have. I only hope to have mine look like that someday. Janet, do you mind if I ask you a question? Do you water your flowers from the top or from the bottom, and how often do you water them? I have done both, but sometimes don't have luck with certain ones, I don't know if it is root rot or what exactly. Anyway, I am really looking forward to finding out more about African Violets and meeting some more new people. This is a wonderful group and I find that their information is very helpful indeed. Again, thank you once again for sharing your website with me. If you get a chance please drop me a line. Sincerely, Janet Harrod
