Kim: Wow, what a wonderful history of pumps. Thank you for making this available. I'm new to the pump, I started in Jan. 2009. I had my pancreas removed in 2007 due to an extended illness with it. I love using my Minimed Paradigm 522. I also have a new wonderful gadget, it's the continuous gloucose monitor. I have the Freestyle Navigator, it's 99% accurate and has the least problems and risks of infection than any other CGM. In Europe they do NOT require blood tests before treating when usning the Navigator, it's proven itself to be that accurate. I love the alarms that go off when I'm getting to high or low. Thank you again for your wonderful history page. Kim

Craig Roberts: Hey, hey everybody. I found this site when I was doing research on pumps before I ever started pumping. It's great! And, guess what?!? Jan's got a book out now!! It's called "Tolerating the Sweet Life" and sales benefit the JDRF and Insulin-Pumpers.org. Her book gives her experiences with diabetes for over 50 years, pumping for over 20 years, and having dialysis for two years. It's a great read! Go to http://www.authorhouse.com, click on "Bookstore" and enter "Hughey" into the search box. There's also a companion book -- "A C.L.I.P. of Poems." Keep up the good work Jan!

Cheryl McQueen: I met Jan when I was first diagnosed 31 years ago. She has been an inspiration to me ever since. Jan is the kind of person who can help all of us diabetics to have strength and hope with this disease. She is an angle sent from God above to me the day I met her.

shannon blalock: I'm a type I diabetic and a pediatric resident. I am doing a presentation on insulin pumps for our faculty at Arkansas Children's Hospital. The pictures of the pump are a great documentary. Is there any way I can find these to show in my presentation? Shannon Blalock, M.D.

Tonie Collova: Would LOVE to wear the pump. I'm sure I'd be alot more apt to take insulin when I should as I would not have to leave the table or excuse myself to take the insulin when needed. I would simply use the remote. What a dream for me! ! !

daphne: Hi, What a great photo album. I recognized a few of those pumps and that glass syringe injector thingy from way back when my sister used them. She began pumping in the early 1980's. She was born in 1947, and I was born in 1962. I was diagnosed with Type I IDDM in 1983 and have been pumping since 1995. . . Y'all really give me inspiration, thanks for helping to pave the way. Daphne

Billie Crannell: As a diabetes educator and certified pump trainer your photo album is priceless! I have been trying to obtain pictures of early pumps without success. Could you share a site where they might be available? Many thanks, Billie

Peter Gordon: I bagan pumping in 1981 with the Autosyringe AS*6C. When I upgraded to the AS6MP, I passed the original on to the doctor who gave it to a medicare patient (who I believe is still using it). From the AS6MP, I upgraded to the 8MP (Eugly), then to a Minined 507c, and currently using the Dtron+. I still have the 6MP and 8MP (which both still work!). Thanks for this walk down memory lane!

Helen: Hi,thanks for the great info and photos. I have been pumping for 2mths (june '02), diagnosed type 1 at age 32. My dad remembers his father sterilizing his glass syringes in a frying pan...how far we've come! I love some of the pump names - betatron?!! sounds like a space ship.
August 27, 2002 11:13AM

Ingrid Fylling: Great site! I've been diabetic for 6,5 years and a pumper for 2. Reading your detailed descriptions has been very interesting to me. I'm also interested in the history of diabetes in general, so I would apreciate it a lot if you have any relevant sites to recomend.
August 14, 2002 12:42PM

Frida: Jan, Very interesting and informative! Not a diabetic and hope I never have to use the information - but think it is great that you have gone to so much time and effort to share your story and to encourage others!

Marilyn \"McView\": Great pages Jan. I started pumping in 1988 with a Minimed 504. It was relatively new at that time. I still have the manual and would be happy to send you copies of this is you are interested. Although the 504 was the same size as the current pumps, the features and operation were very different. (I'm on a 508 now).

Steve Baker: I loved the pictures. I started on the CPI 9100 in 1982. What a monster! I then moved to the Betatron II then the Betatron IV. I then was forced to leave CPI as they were leaving the pump business and in 1990 I started on the Minimed 504-S. I traded up in 1994 to the model 506 and last July I started on the 508. I will be moving this Fall to the new Paradigm pump from Minimed and am looking foreword to the change. I would have to say the two greatest advancements with Insulin pumps for me have been the quick disconnect infusion sets and Humalog insulin. Keep up the great site, I enjoyed it very much and keep on pumping.

Craige Webb: I have been a diabetic since 6/1975. Now I have the finances to get a pump. But I need the costs and specifications to choose the right one with my Docter and Voc. Rehab.

Janine Shea: Hi, great pictures! I started on an Autosyringe but have no images of it. I also used a Nordisk Infuser, which I still have, along with the instruction book. I have been on a pump for 17 years so have worked my way through several pumps (also Minimed 504-S, 506, now 508). If you need any info about the Infuser, feel free to email me. My pump pages are at: http://members.shaw.ca/insulinpumps/ and there are a couple of pump pics.

mahsa: Hello, I am a UC Davis student and I am doing research on insulin pumps. My boyfriend is diabetic and want to know as much as i possibly can about what I can do to help, as well as what new products are available. It would be awsome to learn about the history of the insulin pump.

Rebecca Abbey: I have had diabetes for 26 years and have been trying to get on the insulin pump. My 2 year old daughter was dx'd recently with Type 1. Hopefully, armed with more knowledge and determination for my daughter, we will both be pumpers soon. Thanks for the info.
August 27, 2001 4:49PM

Glenda Strickland: This is so much fun to visit! My brother had an Autosyringe (with the syringe outside) in 1979 and several "upgrades" until he finally got a double transplant in 1996. I got a MiniMed 504-S in 1988, which finally broke in 1993. I replaced it with my present pump, a 506. I have enjoyed pumping, but feel like such an "old" pumper! It is good to meet someone else who knows the advantages of the pumps these days! Thanks for all the memories!
