Album: Wrap Dolls
The art of wrapping sacred objects (Nkisi) can be traced to the people of Sierra Leone and Congo. This technique was passed from generation to generation surviving the "crossing" to the Americas. Africans new to the Americas varied this technique to suit the materials available to them - cloth, natural fibers and wood.
The dolls you see here are wrapped around recycled water containers. Using one piece of cloth and string, a figure is fashioned. They are embellished with beautiful fabrics and beads. This is one type of dollmaking technique I use to create my interpretation of the ancient art form. These dolls sell for $35 - $80. contact me beezartdolls@comcast.net
