c. late 1500s Liege Wheel Lock by Baviere. The wheel lock mechanism was probably invented c. 1500 in Germany, though the Chinese described a similar mechanism c. 1400. In 1517, the first gun control laws banning the wheel lock were proclaimed by the Emperor Maximilian I, first in Austria and then throughout the Holy Roman Empire.
