In the story, Annakey's village has been destroyed, and the old village Dollmage has passed on her powers. Annakey must help lead her people to their new home. Her bag holds muslin and a needlebook with scissors, needles, and thread; the tools she will need to make new story dolls. Her left bracelet holds symbols of the elements she needs to build the new village in miniature; earth, wood, metal, flora, and fauna.
