There is a reason it's officially called one of the Seven Wonders of the World. If you've ever been or know someone who has, you understand pictures are not worth a thousand words. The 'hole in the ground', the Big Ditch, or the Grand Canyon....however you refer to it, well, it's just awesome. 277 river miles long, 10 miles across, and over a mile deep, it's bigger than big.
Due to time constraints, we chose to camp in Williams, AZ and take the train to the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon Railway operates a fabulous resort including the train depot, a first class hotel, restaurant, recreational activities, and one of the fanciest RV parks we've ever visited. The staff at GCR are the friendliest and most helpful folks I've run across. Upon check-in at the resort, an offer was made to come to our coach and walk our dogs (since they were not suited to kennel services) during our long day at the Grand Canyon, free of charge. We traveled in the Club Car (original 1923 Pullman car) and made a new friend of Jack, our host for the day. A forestry and horticultural PhD waiting for an opening in his field, Jack is having a ball entertaining tourists! Our conductor, Bernie, sat with us on the return trip and regaled us with stories about the history of the railroad. All in all, one of the most delightful, truly tourist days we've experienced. We will be back............
