"Bernard is a variation of Belgian Crolle damascus. The Crolle bars consist of rectangular strips of alternating iron and steel welded into a square bar, while the Bernard bar cross section looks like a checkerboard of alternating small square bars of iron and steel." Note the tiny 'roses' in the pattern of the top barrel. Heuse-Lemoine called their "Bernard" patterns Quality I and II, but it is likely that all of the members of Syndicat des Fabricants de canons de fusils de la Vesdre produced a "Bernard" variant in different grades. Leopold Bernard (1832-1867) was a well recognized canonier in Paris. His company manufactured firearms and damascus barrels until 1890. http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dfg2hmx7_108gj6wxpcf
