This is how I measure my gauge. I scan the swatch at 400 dpi, then superimpose a 1-inch grid in Corel Photo-Paint. (I'm sure other paint programs have similar tools.) For this screen capture, I reduced the image to 33%. It's no problem to count the stitches, even at sock gauges, using this method.
