Rear Cross Member

We are building and installing new frame rails and needed a strong attachment point at the rear. We felt like a strong rear cross member was needed. The cross member will allow us to make sure the chassis is square, plumb and level before the frame rails tie it all together.

This is a uni-body car so to install a rear frame you have to weld the body to the new frame. We felt that we needed to weld the new frame to the strongest part of the uni-body. The strongest part we could find was the rear bumper support. The rear bumper support is still uni-body construction but it gets its strength from heavier sheet metal stampings with multiple layers over lapping to form a triagulated shape. This seemed like the logical attachment point for the new cross member. The following photo's show how we did it.
