I grew up in the North in a
log cabin where my parents collected antiques and had the house full of
unusual pieces from the past. My father created primitive folk art out of
wood and my mother enjoyed textile crafts such as needle work and rug
hooking. For me, creating primitives is a joy because it reminds me of my
youth and brings me comfort.
Having been raised in such an environment, I am fascinated with life from
the 1800's. A women's priority was to take care of her family and
make a comfortable home but she still found time to create unique heirlooms
from the little they may have had to spare for such projects. Make-do
style pinkeeps, rag stuffed prairie dolls, sawdust filled pillows and
quilts made from scraps of fabric all started from the minds of these
creative women. These women had the ability to utilize the most ordinary things and
make what we now appreciate as such extraordinary treasures.
I hope my handmade primitives bring you fond memories from the past and add
a warmth to your home as well.
