Front end sheetmetal modification My original plan was to use all the stock front end sheetmetal, and I designed the C4 Corvette suspension conversion so I could do that. However, when I got started putting the front end together I found that the Spal 11" fans I wanted to use in the stock core support interfered with my Street and Performance serpentine idlers. That resulted a change to wider 4000 CFM Derale fans and a custom radiator support moved forward slightly.... which resulted in new inner fenderwells.... which resulted in a new hood latch plate..... then a new radiator cover... and even more sheetmetal mods. I also had a custom radiator and condenser built by PRC. After I got the inner fenders fabbed and installed, it was obvious that I needed to do something to the firewall. I decided that a whole new one was in order, rather than to try to make the asymmetrical stock one look good. So I fabbed one up and installed it. I also buit some custom sheetmetal covers for the fans and filled the lower splash pan, as well as splash panels under the fender. I made covers that protect the fenders from rocks coming up from the tires. After all that, I didn't want anything else on the firewall so I designed and fabbed some new stainless steel hood hinges. That turned out to be a lot more design work than anticipated, but I like the result. A custom air intake will be built that goes over the radiator cover to bring in cold air. |
