Foliage Contrasts
Choosing plants with variegated, silver or dark red foliage adds interest to the garden even when the plants are not in bloom. In this small raised bed, I have planted the dark-red-leaved Sedum 'Purple Emperor', the silver-leaved Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), and the blue-green-leaved Self-Heal (Prunella laciniata). To the right of the Self-Heal is our native King's Crown (Sedum integrifolium), whose leaves turn red in autumn, and, in front of the Edelweiss, is the lime-green-leaved Sedum 'Autumn Joy' which will soon display its lovely mounds of deep pink flowers.
