West-Facing Garden
This raised bed was filled with our native, conifer-woodland soil which is very sandy and acidic. To each wheelbarrow-load of soil, I added two quart containers of ground limestone to raise the pH, two quart containers of gypsum to add calcium and sulfur, 2 gallons of dried, chopped leaves, 1-1/2 bags of mushroom compost (from Wal-Mart) and enough alfalfa pellets (all-purpose organic fertilizer) to cover the surface of the wheelbarrow. I built this garden in the spring of 1998 and, as of 2006, I still do NOT need to add any fertilizer at all!
