Kitchen Garden
The Kitchen Garden is so-named because we can view it from our kitchen window! It has 4 major climates: in front is a bog garden; above the bog garden is a dryland, semi-shaded environment; between the house and the dryland area is the cool, shaded microclimate; and facing south-southeast is the hot, dry Mediterranean climate. A 5th microclimate is produced by the "umbrella effect" of the lodgepole pine at the left. This area produces very dwarfed plants (if they survive at all) due to the tree withholding rain and extracting water and nutrients from the soil below its canopy.
