Apollo 15 - 17 The last three missions to the Moon saw the programme of lunar exploration kick into high gear. With extended stays on the surface, longer EVA's, better quality and colour TV and the first use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, every effort was made to get the most scientific return from each mission. Apollo 15 landed in the spectacular Hadley-Apennine region and saw the first use of the LRV, as well as a small experiment by Dave Scott using a hammer and feather that proved what we had been taught at school was correct! Apollo 16 saw John Young and Charlie Duke leaping on the Descartes Highland Plains as well as some aggressive test driving of the LRV! Apollo 17 brought the curtain down with Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt exploring the valley of Taurus-Littrow from end to end. As the only trained geologist to visit the Moon, Schmitt put his knowledge and skills to good use. A TV camera remotely controlled from the Earth gave us the spectacular sight of the LM 'Challenger' lifting off from the lunar surface. |
