Hiking Mt. San Jacinto 2003

"Men play at tragedy because they do not believe in the reality of the tragedy which is actually being staged in the civilised world." -Jose Ortega y Gasset. "Straddling the top of the world, one foot in China and the other in Nepal, I cleared the ice from my oxygen mask, hunched a shoulder against the wind, and stared absently down at the vastness of Tibet." -Jon Krakauer on climbing Mt. Everest in his 1997 classic Into Thin Air.

While my climb to Mt. San Jacinto (the second highest peak in Southern California at 10,834 feet) wasn't as dramatic as Mr. Krakauer's, it had all the perils of when one climbs high in the mountains.
