Yan Lipao Basketry
The craft of "Yan Lipao" basketry would have disappeared completely had it not been for the intervention of Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand, who encouraged the SUPPORT Foundation to revive this art and teach it to its trainees. These baskets are made from a base of rattan vine stiched together with fern stems. The vines which form Yan Lipao baskets cannot be grown commerically on farms. They are harvested in the rain forests of Thailand, especially in the swamps of Southern Thailand. A medium-sized basket takes several months to make.
