Turnbull Window, St Oswalds,Ashbourne, Derbyshire This is a stunning English Arts and Crafts window we saw on a walking-day (November 9 2004)in the beautiful old Derbyshire town of Ashbourne. The most easterly of the windows has fine modern glass given by Mr and Mrs Peveril Turnbull of Sandybrook Hall in 1905. It is a design by Christopher Whall. The windows were in memory of their daughters who died in a fire in 1901.....one daughter was a poet.....her dress caught fire and her sister died trying to save her. The window is of three lights, showing mediaeval symbolism in modern grace and beauty, and is particularly rich in colour and line. It contains representations of the Virgin Martyr Saints, St Cecilia, St Monica, and St Dorothea. St Monica bears the chalice and a crook and in the distance we see a church. St Dorothea is beautiful with her roses and in the centre light we see St Cecila falling asleep to the sounds of heavenly music, an exquisite symbol of death. |
