Road Trip USA-September 20-21, 2004
"Thanks to the interstate highway system, it is now possible to travel from coast to coast without seeing anything." - Charles Kuralt.
"The old roads return to the sky some of its color. Then, in truth, they carry a mysterious cast of blue, and it's that time when the pull of the blue highway is strongest, when the open road is a beckoning, a strangeness, a place where a man can lose himself." -William Least Heat Moon's "Blue Highways"
In a diner in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico on Central Avenue (locals still call it Route 66) I struck up a conversation with an older gentlemen and was describing my road trip to him. He mentioned he always wanted to do something similar but never found the time to do so.
I asked him, "If you had no time or budget contraints, where would you like to travel to?"
He replied, "Well, right here."
I gave him a puzzled looked. He then answered, "Sure, I could go to new and exciting places that I have never been before, but the best part of traveling is coming home to the people you love and to the people who love you."
Old Mother Road take me home.
