Road Trip USA-September 13-15, 2004

This part of my road trip will take us to larger than life mountains, animal statues, granite sculptures, the famed Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and legendary gunfighters. Photos and text copyright by Sam Antonio. To purchase prints or to license an image please contact me at bircher@earthlink.net.

The master sculptor of Mount Rushmore, Gutzon Borglum, was a patriot who believed in the celebration of things American. To him "American" meant "big." He proclaimed in 1930, "A monument's dimension should be determined by the importance of the events commemorated." Thus his ideals are forever reflected in the faces of Mount Rushmore which serve as a shrine of democracy for all to see.
