Doing the bodywork I did all the bodywork and paint on this car the first time back in about 1974 to 1982. It needed new rocker panels, new inner rockers, a right quarter panel, portions of the left quarter panel and some floor patches. All of the bodywork was done in lead solder. I then painted it with acrylic lacquer which now needs to be completely re-done in urethane. With the new suspension, T56 6-speed transmission, and big tires, I needed to "minitub" the car and install a new raised tranny tunnel as well as a new cargo floor to accommodate a new custom stainless steel fuel tank. Those changes required me to eliminate the spare tire well and remove the old cargo floor. New tubs were fabricated as well as a new cargo floor and custom bracing. While installing the new 4" minitubs, I decided to go ahead and replace the entire floor, as well as most of the floor braces, and inner and outer rocker panels. This was not planned, but I was glad that I did it after it was completed since the old floor had been patched in many places. I also had to replace some sections of the lower inner quarters. All of the old paint was stripped to bare metal, and both quarters will be replaced with new ones. I ended up replacing a lot more sheetmetal than I had planned, but the end product is almost like a new body. Having someone else do this would have been cost-prohibitive, so I am glad I could do it all myself. |
