Episode 7: Happy Holidays

Although, for the last three years, Christmas joy had been tempered by the unspeakable pain of separation, Clark had, for the benefit of his children, sought out the magic and wonder of the season. This year, the seeking was a lot easier. Christmas Eve found the household busy with the decoration of the tree. The children made William a special ornament, in celebration of his safe return. They also hung one for Gretyl to celebrate the hope of hers. When they were done, the children made a circle around the tree and sang songs. Clark had a surprise planned for them this evening and, now and then, glanced expectantly at the door. He didn’t know, though, just how great that surprise would be.

Suddenly, the door burst open and a hearty “Ho Ho Ho!” echoed from the walls. The children fell silent…but only for a moment. “Santa Claus!!!”they cried in unison, as they beckoned him into the warmth of the house. “Ho! Ho! Ho!” None of the children noticed any familiarity in the boisterous voice, nor did they care that Santa’s eyes were very much like Constable Firman’s. All they noticed were presents and they quickly dove into the pile of gifts that the old elf had in front of him. “But wait!” cried Santa. “Where is your father? I have a very special gift for him”. Betsy ran to the kitchen to find him preparing a tray of cookies. When Clark stepped into the living room, a timeless silence engulfed the room, shattered by the tray of goodies as it hit the floor. He stared ahead, but not at Santa. He saw nothing but the small form that stood in the shadows behind him.
