William is Home Nothing mattered to Clark von Tonner now, except that his young son was safely in his arms again. It didn't matter that the boy was confused or that his first words to his father were in French, a language that Clark knew only faintly. It didn't matter that the child could offer no information on where he'd been or with whom or that he couldn't give any clues as to the wherabouts of his twin sister, Gretyl. All that mattered to Clark was that he could feel his son's warm hand around his shoulder. After their meeting in the woods on that cold, snowy day, Clark and the children quickly ushered William into the warmth of their cabin and fed him a hearty dinner. They enjoyed telling and listening to stories by the fire until it grew late. Sandy, William's only brother, proudly showed the child his new bedroom that Clark had furnished in the days when he had tried so hard to keep alive his hope. There Clark and the boys shared a tender moment as William tried, in French, to tell his papa that he was glad to be safe and warm. Sandy told him of the toys that he would show him in the morning but right now, insisted Clark, it was time for his little fellow to lay down his head. Sandy and Clark tenderly tucked him into his new bed and William fell, quickly, off to sleep. Clark gazed on, lovingly, his heart bursting with a new feeling....happiness. |
