Palace of the Popes
In 1309, a French pope was elected (Pope Clement V), and at the urging of the French king moved from Rome to Avignon. From 1378 to 1403, there were two popes that ruled, one in Rome and one in Avignon causing in the Catholic Church what was known as the great schism.
