Capt. Joseph went to sea for a living. One season the Capt. left but never returned. Eventually Nancy received word that he had died of yellow fever at sea and they buried him in Baltimore. Nancy always lit a candle for him every evening thereafter, which she dutifully placed in her window that faced the St. George's River and sea beyond. And when ships were out on the water, they would know where they were by that light. As it became a well known landmark for local seafarers.
