If you want to know about Miriam Haskell - this is a must place to visit!
Yesterday I went through all 700+ eBay listings for Haskell.
About half of these listings only use Haskell in their listing description, I guess to get more hits, but have nothing to do with Haskell items.
There are those that use the name Haskell to indicate a style, but do not claim that their item is a Haskell.
There are New Haskells, usually selling fairly inexpensively, and most of these are so listed.
There are Haskell and or Haskellesque findings, so someone can make their own 'Haskell'.
There are a lot of mistaken identifications of 'unsigned' Haskells, but most of these are honest mistakes.
There are the added hang tags, added hooks, and added old marked clasps onto anything that remotely resembles a Haskell. Most of these don't even come close to the materials, design, or construction of a Real Haskell. Many of these may be 2nd or 3rd generation sales, where the sellers have no idea that it isn't real.
Then, there are the "New"- old Haskells, some of them showing up with shiny new oval plaques and even shiny new horseshoes. Most of these are pins, and many use some thick filigree stamping that is sort of scrolled to one larger side. The plaques are usually placed in odd places and many of them have riveted parts. There is one type of specific riveting that Haskell used, called 'swedging' where a central stone would be pressed into a finding, but the filigree stampings would not be riveted together-(too complex to get into further in an email) Seen a couple of pearl necklaces, now using this scrolled filigree stamping on the centerpiece.
Then there is a plethora of outright 'Fakes' being newly constructed and sold on eBay. Many of these have bright shiny new filigree stampings, some of which may even be new/old stampings, many have older plaques used on the backs (check for glue), or added as hang tags, but usually they're not shiny, like the rest of the back. Many use the 1969 patented slide clasp, (used by Haskell 1975-1980) and they're just so full of bright shiny new stones and beads. Usually the colors are very strong and conflict totally, which Haskell would never have done. And, they have piles of these cheery findings and stones and pearls in all the wrong places. The wiring sticks out all over the place and many of the new seed bead constructions are so sloppy as to be an embarrassment to the great Haskell designers. Especially the so-called Haskell seed bead bracelets now being made.
Where do these dealers get all this supply of "Guaranteed Old Haskell', week after week after week after month after month??
My blood boils over looking at all this fraud, but I can't contact every buyer, unknowing seller, or eBay with every 'bad Haskell'.
But, I just don't want our JC family to be victimized. Check on the authenticity guarantee and return policy!
So, please, be careful.
Sincerely,
Sheila Pamfiloff
