~~~~~~~~~~~Anna Pottery Exhibit~~~~~~~~~~~ The Anna-Kirkpatrick Exhibit that was at the Centre May 2nd and 3rd was a great success!
This was a rare opportunity to see numerous Anna Pottery novelty examples in one setting. This show was sponsored by the Anna Kirkpatrick Pottery Museum located in Anna, Illinois. The museum is located literally within a couple blocks from the original pottery site. The exhibit was an informational exhibit. People were onsite to discuss the history of the Anna Pottery, the items on display in detail and other Anna Pottery items.
The Anna Kirkpatrick Pottery was in operation from 1859 - 1903. The pottery was run by the Kirkpatrick Brothers, Cornwall and Wallace. Cornwall was the first mayor of Anna, board member of the Illinois Hospital for the Insane, and business head of the operation. Wallace was an avid hunter, fisherman and snake collector. He was the chief showman for the pottery and took his snakes and pottery on the road to local and regional ag fairs as well as world's fairs. The two brothers merged their different interests to create the most fascinating folk art stoneware recognized to date. Even though the pottery produced utility wares by the millions, they are known for their fantastic and bizarre one of a kind items which reflected the government, economics and society of the time. On exhibit were snake jugs which supported the local temperance movement of the day, pig bottles used to reflect the midwest economic system, a one of a kind 1886 fair directory jug, and numerous other items which will make you laugh and think.
