LOS ANGELES - More than 100 former Bruin players returned to Westwood this weekend, as the UCLA women's tennis program hosted an alumni reunion, March 27-29, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Specifically honored at the reunion were UCLA's two national championship teams of 1981 and 2008, along with a number of past singles and doubles national champions. The event coincided with two of the Bruins' biggest home matches of the season, as UCLA hosted No. 11 Stanford on Friday and No. 8 Cal on Saturday.

"We are so excited to have all of these players back on campus to celebrate their experiences at UCLA," said head coach Stella Sampras Webster. "Some of the players were here from the very beginning and helped make UCLA the successful program that it is today. We specifically want to thank them and show them how much they have meant to this university. Others have carried on that winning tradition and helped sustain this program among the nation's elite. This reunion is to say thank you to everyone who has been a part of the UCLA tradition."

Among those being honored were national championship singles winners Jeanne Duvall (1978 AIAW) and Keri Phebus (1995 NCAA), along with NCAA doubles champions Lynn Lewis/Heather Ludloff (1982), Allyson Cooper/Sampras (1988), Mamie Ceniza/Iwalani McCalla (1992), Phebus/Susie Starrett (1995), Lauren Fisher (2004) and Tracy Lin/Riza Zalameda (2008). Former WTA Tour standout Kim Po Messerli, who reached career-high world rankings of No. 14 in singles and No. 6 in doubles, was also on hand, as well as UCLA's former head coaches Bill Zaima and Gayle Godwin.

Among the festivities were a family tennis clinic, an alumni round-robin doubles tournament, and a banquet on Saturday night in the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame where the 1981 team were given national championship rings.

"In my conversations with the players from that 1981 team, one of the things they are really looking forward to is getting their rings," said Sampras Webster. "They didn't give out rings for national championships back then so it's a big deal for them."

UCLA's alumni reunion weekend kicked off Friday when the ninth-ranked Bruins hosted No. 11 Stanford. In addition, UCLA's match with No. 8 Cal was on Saturday at Noon.
