World's youngest pumper
Maverick Colt Roe, was diagnosed with DM at 24 hr. of age. He began using an insulin pump at 10 days when his BG was 1,225. NOTE: dated 9/30/02 received from Maverick's mother Bridget and printed with her permission: Maverick's story is now being considered by MiniMed for publication. He is two years old and was born with diabetes, started on the pump at 10 days old. He is doing great now. Although we have moved from Arkansas, we got lucky and found another doctor who is also diabetic and is very positive and helpful with his pump. Maverick has not outgrown his diabetes like the article suggested might happen. He is classified as a Type 1. The pump has been wonderful for him. He is treated just like our other two children (he gets treats and goodies just like they do). It has also been great during illnesses/growth spurts. He weighs 4 times as much as he did when he received his pump and we feel that it has kept up with him very well. We love not having to be on a strict schedule. Maverick loves to sleep, and I cannot imagine waking him up for sugar all the time. Also, because he was so little, he received very small doses of insulin. In the beginning he was getting a total of 3 units of Humalog a day. I cannot imagine trying to measure that in a syringe. The pump allows us to give him doses as small as 0.05units (his humalog is diluted with sterile diluent 50/50). He was diagnosed with a brain abnormality at 9 months, hearing impairment at 14 months, and now he is virtually deaf. [The next picture of the little boy is Maverick at 18 months]. See two of his pictures in my book: http://maxpages.com/TSLandCLIP
