The Evolution of Pumps The prototype of the first pump that delivered glucagon as well as insulin, backpack style, was in the early '60s. Next is a picture of some early pumps. Notice the picture of me with my first pump - a CPI/Lilly Betatron 9100 which was the size of a checkbook box, in 1983. Most of today's pumps are about the size of 3/4" stack of business cards.
