The Barranquilla Carnival is the most popular cultural expression in Colombia The four days that the Carnival of Barranquilla lasts were declared last year by UNESCO as a Master Plan of Oral and Immaterial Patrimony of Humanity. Without having the dimensions of the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the party at Barranquilla is distinguished by its popular deeprootedness, because of its music and costumes, especially the ones of animals, which come from rural mythology, fisherman and workers from the valleys of the river Magdalena and older cities than Barranquilla, like Santa Marta and Cartagena.
