Art Purchase.
Traveling North from the Sea of Galilee and Tiberias on the morning of October 24th, we went up into the hills to mountain town called Safed. It used to be a refuge for Jewish scholars a long, long time ago. Now it is mostly a tourist town. In it are many art shops. We found a shop displaying works by Leon Azoulay. He does what is called microcalligraphy. It takes a year to create the original of the picture or one like it that you see here. He then does silk screens to make duplicates, each of which are numbered. All the dark areas you see are words made of very tiny Hebrew letters. What you see is the entire first book of the Hebrew Bible, Genesis, on one piece of paper!!! It hangs in our livingroom. Somehow missed is the discussion of the water system of Israe. Most of the water not gained from desalinization comes from the Sea of Galilee. There is a huge pumping station in that vicinity which pumps water up into the hills north of the area. From there, it mostly flows by gravity southward to the entire country with a little help here and there to gain the hills of places like Safed.
