Navy Pier and Chicago Lakefront. Navy Pier was built in 1916 as a military installation. It is the largest pier in the world. During its existence, it became a university site, was left unattended for a great period of time and was finally remodeled to open as a major attraction for the local population and visiting tourists in 1995. It holds many shops, restaurants, exhibition halls, a Shakespeare Festival, many sculptures and docking area for many tourist ships and boats. In a later photo, you can see the ferris wheel located on Navy Pier.
