WE LOVE IT HERE 1997 Beginning Temporary Front This is the beginning of a story that began in June of 1994 up through the year 2000. For this moment I just want to give you a time frame of what happened when because we have not stopped the rest of our lives to build our dream. We have remained involved in our fulltime jobs and community and families. June '94 built a room out of tires onto our root cellar. We liked the technique and in Sept. began our home. Our son, Shane, came home to help us for the first 3 weeks,to get the majority of the tires up for the "house" part. Tom hauled all the dirt.Altogether 7 or 8 others helped with the majority of the tire walls. By Thanksgiving most of the tire walls were up on our 3 "U" earthship. We didn't get as far as we hoped. Sept-Nov'95 We built wing walls and top course of tires and the continuous bond beam. July-Nov'96 Up went the beams, plywood ceiling, and 8 inches of rigid insulation.Covered it all with heavy black plastic weighted down with lots of tire and rims for the winter. The front tire wall was also constructed. Sept-Nov'97 We enclosed the front tire wall so we would have a temporary "front" on our house. We used commercial 4'x12' panels of corrugated plastic and screwed in onto the front instead of patio door glass. Also the front in nothing more than a lean to, which is why it is at a 45 degree angle! Now we could work inside for the winter. Jan-Feb'98 our son Shaun was here to work on our house and it was so nice inside the house that we mixed cement and poured our floors in all 3 "U"s. The temperature outside was minus 20 degrees F. !!! What a wonderful experience. Patio blocks were made all winter and in May the wiring was done along with more packing the walls. In July we decided to move in and by Oct were in and our trailer was sold and gone. Nov.'99 found us in our home with the bare necessities and a wood stove. We just lived for awhile. This was a major change! some people didn't know where in the world we had disappeared to! Nov'2000 is gone and we are enjoying the journey. In July we did our ferrous cement roof. |
