Port Arthur Prison Facility. Port Arthur was a model prison of its day. The prisoners did all kinds of trade work, hard labor, coal mining some hours away and farming. They were flogged, they were sometime kept in isolation and in general weren't treated well at all. This prison functioned from 1830 to 1877. There was an asylum for those thought to be insane on the prison grounds late in its existence.
