Eaglehawk Neck.
We are at the final stop of our drive for the day; Eaglehawk Neck and Port Arthur, Tasmania. Time for a history and geography lesson. As most of you probably know, Australia was established as a prison for English convicts. Tasmania was the area where the worst of the convicts in Australia were sent. This State of Australia is located directly south of the mainland of Australia and of the city of Melbourne which is located in the State of Victoria. Slightly south and west of the capital of Tasmania, Hobart, which lies on the south east margin of Tasmania is the Tasman Peninsula on which is located an area known as Port Arthur, the site of the prison where the nastiest prisoners in all of Australia were kept. The entrance to the Tasman Peninsula is a strip of land patroled by viscious dogs at the time when this prison was functioning, 1830-1837. It is called Eaglehawk Neck. It was almost impossible to escape the prison grounds through the water and nearly as impossible to get past the dogs on Eaglehawk Neck.
