The Public's Tribute To STS-107

All of the photos in this album were taken on February 5, 2003, outside the main gate of the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. These photos, as well as the images on television and the photos in newspapers and magazines, don't even begin to capture the public's outpouring of grief, love, and support. I live in the area and decided to wait until the day after the public memorial service to go over and view this tribute to the crew of STS-107 that perished on February 1, 2003. It was an experience that I'll never forget.

I was especially struck by all the notes and pictures that young children left behind for the astronauts and their families. On a piece of notebook paper a young child taped his school picture and wrote, "My name is William Rodriguez and when I grow up I want to be an astronaut."
