The Graveyard

Fielder Bowie Smith, who inherited The Highlands at some point after it was built, is believed to be the person who created the family plot on the top of the hill behind the home. It appears that when his daughter, Elizabeth (Eliza) Ann Smith Boswell died at the age of 17 in 1826, she was one of the first laid to rest with a tombstone.

With in a year of her death, a second body was laid to rest on the opposite side of the cemetery. This was yet another daughter of Fielder Bowie Smith and she was called Elizabeth Ann, as well. She died at the age of 2. Many descendants of the Smith Family continued to be buried in this cemetery until 1933. It is unknown, according to the documents we have obtained, where the original Family members of the Highlands were laid to rest.
