The Bayon Temple More than ten centuries ago, as many as one million people lived in the Angkor region. It was the world's largest settlement. Nowadays, the remains of 1,000 Hindu and Buddhist temples are scattered over an area of 190 square miles. The Bayon Temple was built primarily as a Buddhist temple (although various local deities were also worshipped there). In the mid-13th century the temple was converted to Hinduism.
