Birds of Big Basin While at Big Basin Redwoods State Park it is likely that you will hear the ACORN WOODPECKERS laughing from high above, the CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE singing in the nearby oaks, the heavy CAW of the COMMON RAVEN, and in spring the HERMIT THRUSH with it's spiraling song, or the long trilling song of the small WINTER WREN. Near the picnic tables you are likely to see the blue STELLER'S JAY and the cute DARK-EYED JUNCO. Keep an eye on tree trunks for the BROWN CREEPER ascending, and keep an eye in the creeks for an AMERICAN DIPPER taking a dip. I will get pictures of the rest of these birds, as they hold still for my silver zoom camera (wildlife seems to not like the color). Thanks to Karen DeMello, a fellow Docent at Big Basin for the bird information, and the Bird walk last weekend. When at Big Basin, check to see if she is leading a walk about Birds! |
