The Chinese manned spaceflight programme opened on 15th October 2003 with the launch of the spacecraft Shenzhou 5 crewed by Yang Li Wei.

Chinese spacefarers are known as 'Yuhangyuan' or 'Taikonaut' which comes from 'taikong' the Chinese word for space.
